FALL BREAK–TOM DUNCAN || GRASSMOOTS

One of our GrassMoots riders made the trip to Steamboat and beyond for a Fall break.  Tom Duncan lives in the Nashville area and is and avid rider as well as a commercial pilot.  He and his family made the trip to Moots in October, which can be either glourious or hellish weather…it just really depends.  October days can be 60-70 degrees or 32 and snowing.  Tom got a little of both.  He was able to tour the factory and see just how we build our bikes as well as get several rides including one of our “lunch rides”.  It was fun getting to know Tom a bit more and show him around the Steamboat countryside.  I swear Tom, there is oxygen out their somewhere…..!!  He shot some pictures and wrote some words about his trip.  Have a read:

This would be one of those 32 degree and rain/snowing days in October.  Welcome to Steamboat Tom!

Fall Break:

October is the best time of the year to take a trip, so Sonya and I, along with our daughter Catherine, loaded up the car, and headed West.

After several days of traveling, we arrived for five nights in Steamboat Springs, and the cycling opportunity of lifetime; staying at Moots and getting to know, and ride with, the people that design and build these fantastic bicycles.  I took both my Vamoots RSL and Routt RSL on this trip.  I did ride the Vamoots a few times, and though I still consider it the best road bike I’ve ever ridden, I did develop a greater appreciation for the Routt RSL on this trip.  Rides with the Moots Crew on Routt County dirt, mud, and gravel, in rain, snow, and sun, were simply fantastic.  Rolling out of the Moots factory puts you on gravel within 5 minutes, and they have all kinds of it in short order, from washboard roads to smooth gravel capable of 45+mph descents.  I highly recommend stopping by Moots for a visit if you’re ever in Steamboat Springs, CO.

Moots lunch ride with Tom.  Regroup and take in the views.

Tom tops out on the Emerald Loop with Mt. Werner in the back ground.

One of those 65 degree days along the Yampa River in Pleasant Valley.

The Tetons.

The next stop was Jackson Hole, WY, for a few more nights.  October is the definitely the offseason in Jackson, Grand Teton, and Yellowstone, and a great time to be there.  No lines, no crowds, and a nearly deserted stretch of road and bike path leading to breathtaking scenery.  I found a little gravel in Grand Teton, but for the most part it’s smooth roads or bike paths from town to Jenny Lake.  If you haven’t checked out the bike path system in Jackson Hole, you should, as it is quite impressive.
