Can anyone tell me if anything should be used on the seatpost to keep the post and frame from "sticking" together? Or is this not an issue with Ti?

Also, I keep hearing that little scratches, etc can be buffed out with scotch-bright, etc. Anyone ever do this? Does it work?

    Thanks.

You'll probably get responses from others with more experience and information, but I would offer a couple of points to get you started. DO NOT rub your Moots frame with scotch-bright!! Moots frames are bead blasted and have a bit of a dull grey finish instead of the polished or brushed look of other ti manufacturers. When you rub the bead blasted frame, the result is a shiny look- much shinier than the rest of the frame, Buffing ti frames is good advice for the brushed/polished frames from Lynskey, Seven etc. That is one down side to the sweet look of the Moots finish, but most of us here would say it is well worth it. Also, Moots does offer a re-blast and sticker program to get your frame looking brand new.

As for the "sticking" together, definitely check out a product called "ti prep." JonC and others will probably chime in on this, but I always coat the bottom bracket, head tube and seat tube with ti prep to prevent sticking. I actually use it all over the bike where anything is screwed into the frame. Not very expensive and worth the piece of mind.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks. I did not think the scotch bright trick works with the Moots finish but I thought it was worth asking. I'll look into getting some of the Ti prep for my seat post. Thanks for the help.

For ti prep, I use loctite silver-grade anti-seize, per Moots advice. Lemon pledge to clean frame.

Per recommendation from this forum, I've used super fine steel wool on the frame, and pledege to clean it up. It looks great after this treatment. The steel wool did nothing to damage or alter the finish.

    robk07,
Ti-prep between seat post and frame, especially when using AL on Ti. As for the finish of your frame...the best thing to do is wash the bike with soap and water. Wipe frame down with a clean rag using Pledge furniture polish...we like the lemon flavor. If you go after a scratch too aggressively with steel wool or scotch bright you will remove the bead blast finish from the frame. After years of use, you can send your Moots back to us and we will re-finish for a fee.

Let me know is you have any other questions.

    Thanks,

    Jon@Moots

    Jon,
Thanks for clearing that up. I'm never too aggressive, but I'll just use the soap, water, and pledge from now on. I know about the re-finish program, and I'm already saving up for it. Thanks again.

Just a question on this, my seatpost is looking a little manky from various things hanging off it, it seems to have a different finish to the frame, so should I scotchbrite the seatpost before sticking my new decals (thanks Jon they have just arrived, and others as well - whoop !!! The Mercedes is going to look so much better with Mr Moots on it !!!)

And then get the Pledge out ??

Or leave it and cope with the scratches ? This is the seatpost, NOT THE FRAME, I would never want to alter that in any way, it is just so lovely.

    roadiesean,
Glad to hear they made it!

For the seat post, we spin the post in a lathe and use scotch bright on it as it spins. Then we blast the head of the post and fade the blast into the scotch bright finish.

So, what you can do is use scotch bright on the lower portion of the post to remove any marks/scratches and try to leave the blasted finish alone at the top of the post. Once you are done with the scotch bright, wipe the post down with acetone or de-natured alcohol and apply the decal.

Once the decal is in place use a clean rag with Pledge on it to give it a nice shine.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks,

    Jon@Moots

For those of us not inthe US.
    What is Pledge?
I keep reading about it but what exactly is it?

Pledge is just a waxy furniture polish in an aerosol can. Personally I use Pedro's Bike Lust, which gives a nice finish as well.
