   I managed to fry the Mavic Crossmax rear wheel on my MXX YBB. During a down hill crash I somehow managed to blow a hole in the rim (between spokes) and blow out one spoke while bending a few others. LBS is talking to Mavic about a rebuild but I suspect the cost wouldn't be far off building a new wheel, besides I was never 100% sold on the Crossmax anyway. Nice enough wheel but for some reason it felt sluggish, and I never felt that it rolled as well as other wheels. (anyone else experience this?)

   All that said I am thinking a new rear wheel or complete set is in order. I've dreamed about a King hub based wheel, perhaps an I9 set but I am very curious what other have found to be the best wheel complement to the '09 MXX YBB?

   I ride in coastal Maine. Most trails are rooty, rocky, tight, slippery single track. When I make it up to the moutains its a mix of logging roads and woodsy single track. The logging roads make for some ripping down hill and lung busting climbs because they can be steep and always wet and full of obstacles to get through.

   What does everyone think?

   I have the same bike, and had the same wheels. I too blew out a rim, and I replaced it myself for $150 for the rim alone. Shortly after that, one of the pawls exploded and locked up the freehub body, which on that wheel, meant a ruined hub. Found a used hub, rebuilt, and sold them. Got a set of I9's and couldn't stand the drag in the hub. Tried Kings, and it was the same. Sold them both and built a set of Hope EVO2's with Arch rims and Sapim spokes. Bulletproof, great sound, and way less drag than those for less money. They were designed for conditions like yours, if not worse. Some crappy weather in England, but they still ride! Super high quality and also super easy to rebuild, not to mention Hope's fantastic customer service. I've found Mavic to have some of the worst customer service in the biz, and that goes back to my 15+ years in the shop. I'm no longer in the biz, but I still got stymied by them with my wheel. There's a reason they offer insurance on their wheels: they're expensive and they break. That's my $.02

   I too have that bike and run I9 hubs with DT TK 7.14 rims. They do the job just fine, however, I also have a set of Enve XC wheels with King hubs on my Gristle and they are hands down the best wheels I have ever been on. I have a 2012 Mooto X RSL being built and will be running a set of Enve XC on it with King hubs. I personally love King hubs and headsets and never think twice about choosing them. The King hubs on my 2001 YBB still spin as well as the day I got the bike. There are certainly other worthy choices out there, I just stay with what works for me - like Moots!
