My eyes hurt now.
Jon@Moots
I was just thinking Jon maybe you can use this bike as your poster child for why you should get a bead blasting for your Moots. :>)
Nope I have the ugliest Moots ever and she paid $2995 to get it painted like that:

Sorry Mr. Bridges you build some great bikes but I don't care for your custom art work.
Satellite
Yes that is definitely in the running
Not only ugly but sure doesn't look like it would fit an actual human being!
Gee, there's some tough competition!
To date the Moots Malcolm was on the top of my list, its a pretty damn strangle looking bike.
On the topic of artwork though, it almost makes me reconsider my new rims. I'm getting them painted Moots Snoots style. They wont be ready until mid-december, I so hope they come out nice!
Truly, I don't understand painting a Moots. They do NOT get better looking with paint. Even that one that was painted by Spectrum (who does probably the best work out there) that was only partially painted wasn't great.
If you wanna add color to your Moots to "individualize" it, add some colored King bits, some colored face plates, etc. but keep the paint off of the frame.
What does painting do to the warranty? With other companies, painting voids warranties, so what does Moots say?
Both of those bikes look like a clown threw up...
I disagree with you fubar, a nice paint jog can add "pop" to the plain Ti finish. I've seem plenty of non-moots Ti bikes with tasteful paint jobs it just seems moots owners that choose to paint have unusual tastes.
Hey maybe John can add a gallery section for Moots gone bad. For entertainment purposes only of course.
Id rather ride a ugly painted Moots than ride something else with a nice finish..

I love this paint job.
Fubar, still think painted Moots are ugly?...

I think egordon said it best, who cares what it looks like as long as its a Moots.
As Freddy once said, "get on your bikes and ride!"
That is the one I was referring to Domestique. It was well executed and for a painted Moots, it looks good, but I personally wouldn't do it. Like I said, add color and personalization in other ways, like King hubs, headsets, bottom brackets, colored nipples, colored stem and seatpost caps, bar tape, etc. But hey, different strokes for different folks I guess. To paraphrase what someone else said, at least they're riding a Moots.
To me, painting a Moots is akin to having van Gogh's Sunflowers hanging in your house but covered with a curtain. Moots finish and welding is a work of art and I love to look at it. I think covering up this "art" is doing a disservice to the world. If I want a painted bike, I'll get something else.
That Compact that SPW painted for an Above Category client has to be my favorite painted Moots by far, and it has tempted me to get one of mine painted, but I guess I'm like Teamfubar in that I can't bring myself to paint over the Moots welds. I am having SPW custom paint the fork for my RSL, so we'll see how it comes out. I'll resend a pic of my bike to be posted in the gallery once I have switched the forks.
Fubar and tbill, I agree with both of you, covering those beautiful double-pass welds with paint is akin to sacrilege and most of the time I don't care for custom paint jobs on 'any' bike but I do like that white compact on the AC website. I think it was tastefully executed with discretion. I especially like the little details such as the contrasting Mr. Moots on the brake bridge, it's little details like that which draws you in to a closer look and admire the work. Those Bridgers 'dreamride' paint jobs however are another matter entirely. I think Fubar's clown reference described them best. Dreamride?... more like a nightmare (sorry Sat). Each to his own I guess, that's why God invented chocolate and vanilla. :-)
fubar also mentions adding color in other ways and it got me to thinking that I wish CK would bring back the old bold colored headsets like the black one that they still make. I think the old style bold colors smoke the newer sotto voce, don't get me wrong the sotto voce are nice but if I could choose...
Are you talking about the bold, white lettering on the headset, Domsetique? King is still offering the headsets in the same colors as they always have (or at least most of the colors).
Normally, I don't like it when people remove the name of a high end bike or part (like taking the Moots decals off of a bike) because I think the builder deserves to have their work acknowledged. But I think it is kinda cool that King is letting his product speak for itself by not shouting his name on it.
I really admire the company of Chris King. They are really good to their employees, they are stewards of the environment and they make the benchmark of headsets and hubs (yet to tell on the bottom brackets). They are the Moots of the component world.
CK still offers bold colors? I must be looking in all the wrong places, the only bold color I was able to find for the headsets is black. Can you point me in the right direction please, thx.
let's see, maybe the Chris King Web Site?
Well, someone either really liked the paint job, or priced in the cost of a refurb at the factory and ante-ed up. I was hoping to get this for my daughter, but my max bid wasn't close.
what, that green & yellow one full mootion found on fleabay? somebody got a sweet deal (even if it is kinda nasty looking).
On the King website they are offering their stuff in Brown, Black, Navy, Silver, Red, Pewter, Green, Mango and Gold.
All their parts, except Black, are offered in only the "Sotto Voce", which just makes their logo less noticeable. Now the logo that used to be in bold white is now in the same color, but darker shade, than the color of the headset. Only the Black is offered in either Sotto Voce or Bold.
thx for clearing that up fubar, looks like CK is bringing back a few of the bold colors, spotted this on the CC website...
I was under the impression that titanium could not easily be painted, or better said.... the paint will not stick... in which case these ugly bikes could, with some labor be turned back into their original form....
On the topic of artwork though, it almost makes me reconsider my new rims. I'm getting them painted Moots Snoots style. They wont be ready until mid-december, I so hope they come out nice!
