Just came across something really odd with the replaceable hanger on my Vamoots. I am in the process of doing a SRAM to Campy conversion on my new CR. I have to change out the drive shell on on Alchemy rear wheel to Campy. For some reason I could not get the wheel to fall out of the dropouts. I really don not recall having to force the wheel into the frame, but I can;t even get it in now. Not going to say how I finally got it out, but after some quick analysis, I realized that the replaceable hanger had not been appropriately milled and the axle would not fit. I am going to Home Depot tomorrow to get a round file and 'open' the hanger dropout. Just weird, I went with Moots for the 'fit and finish' reputation, this is just not what I expected. Also, while the hanger 'fits' into the dropout, it almost looks like it was made for a different frame. Almost like it just isn't a perfect match. Not the end of the world, and I'll sort it, but NOT what I expected.

MemberThis would definately be an inquiry to Moots direct. I can guarentee they will ask some of the same questions: was it crashed? Was it mis-shifted? Did a stick (or similar) get caught in the drivechain?, Was/did the shipping box have any damage? etc. I know for a fact that Moots checks, checks, and rechecks frames before shipping - routinely a wheel is put in and out several times during aligment check, rear spacing check, etc. (ANY frame maker does this and it's as routine as the day is long).
That wheel should go in/out smooth as butter with virtually 'zero' hassle - save a rear derailluer and/or chain getting in the way on occasion.
Those dropouts and hangers are machined - so they are the same over and over and over. A machine doesn't have a bad one slipping thru....so some sort of damage occurred at shipping? - OR - there is something amiss with the wheel or axle?
You have an Alchemy - are you in Austin? Austin has many high-end shops that could check all the above if you haven't already.It's possible someone 'grabbed' a wrong hanger - but I doubt it, as quality checks would have caught it and the holding bins contain all the same thing....I wouldn't get a file yet - certainly not on the dropout. The hanger, perhaps.....it's replaceable.
You may have to wait till Monday to talk with Moots.

The thing you have to consider is the hanger is most likely NOT made by Moots and if I'm not mistaken, the drop outs aren't either. I believe the dropouts are made by Paragon Machine Works. Either way, I'd just replace the hanger with a new one, either from Moots or go over to http://www.derailleurhanger.com to check 'em out. (Actually, I like the ones from DH.com better, at least for my Cinco as they seem to be a bit "stiffer" than the ones from Moots.)

MemberBut, it has a Moots name on it - and regardless of who made it, it was still checked several times before it left Steamboat. Something either happened between Steamboat and delivery, or there is something wrong with the wheel/axle - at least that's what I would believe.
Moots doesn't bat a thousand, but they bat pretty darn close to it. I am interested to see how this plays out.
There are only so many things to check on a frame - it's not quite the space shuttle - and Moots checks them all and signs off. ANY high end maker checks these things, it's basic frame building. That wheel should pop in and out with no problem what-so-ever and that would have been caught well before boxing to ship it.

MemberWas the bike crashed?? No, it has been ridden less than ten times, As I received it just as NE winter was beginning. It is not an issue with a hanger mis-alignment. The hub will no slide into the dropout with the hanger installed. I am really puzzled how it went in when I assembled the bike, as I do not recall any issues, and now I cannot get the wheel into the drive-side dropout at all. I bought a round file today at Home Depot and will sort the issue tomorrow. My guess is that it is off by a small fraction of a mm, but enough to be an issue. I will take some photos before I 'modify' the hanger to illustrate what the issues are.

MemberI'm suspicious that the wheel didn't come out easily, that indicates to me that something happened to the hanger while the wheel was in place. Something as minor as a small bend inward could have pinched the axel and not disturbed shifting. Hangers are replaceable for a reason, drop in another and see what happens. I always have a spare in my tool box just in case.
PS, I thought most of the smaller frame parts were made in house, by Moots, not an outside source.

Hmm...give me a call on that one. All of our der hangers are made in house. Save the Cinco, which was a Ventana unit. We have specific hangers for the road and mountain. One will not fit the other. There is a chance the hanger was mis-machined, but I really doubt it would have gone out that way.Give me a call to discuss...I'd like to hear more on this one.
