New Zirkel -- Flexibility on Stem and Seatpost?

hi all,

so, quite unexpectedly, i am now the owner of a new-to-me zirkel -- i went to a bike swap today to look around, found a zirkel in my size at a price i couldn't refuse, and, well, yeah.

i'm going to start playing around with set-up on a variety of fronts (this is actually my first mtb in 20 years, so i have no idea what i like in terms of things like bar width, grips, etc.), but i want to get parameters on what I can do to the cockpit. what's the max stem length moots recommends on a zirkel? max seatpost setback?

Why are you wondering about the "max" length of these items? Is the frame too small and you're trying to make it fit? Just curious...

I'd say you should go get fit at a shop. Especially since you haven't been on a MTB in 20 years, things have changed since you last rode one. Top tubes are longer, top tubes slope, bars are wider and stems are much, much shorter. I remember back in the day I had a 150mm stem on all my bikes. Now the longest you'll probably see is a 130, but usually more like a 120 or shorter. My 29'er has a 110 on it.

Pay the fee ($50 or so) for a fitting. I will be money well spent on making the Zirkel fit you like it should.

No, I'm confident that the bike is the right size, though the swap price was such that I felt I could take the risk that it might not be. I'm relatively long in torso and short of leg, so to have a Moots that I can actually stand over, I'm going to need to lengthen the cockpit somewhat. The guy who sold it is shaped differently than I am (aren't we all?), so I'm guessing that his exact set-up (a 0 deg. post and a 100mm stem) may well not be ideal for me. He works in a bike shop and is happy to help me get it set up using their parts box, but they're not Moots dealers, so I'd rather get recommendations from Moots and the forum regarding the bike's design and people's experiences.
