Hey there,
I'm super pumped to be building my dream build. After 20 years on a 23 pound Palette with columbus SL I'm super excited to see if all that progressive overload training has paid off:)

I'm also really excited to be joining the MOOTS community.

GRUPPO and BITS
So I'm going with SRAM Red - well the new black/red gruppo to be precise.
King headset of course
Moots fork, stem and cinch

QUESTION
I'm stuck on which WHEELSET
Top options for me right now: looking for a lightweight, stiff but good ride, 28-24 spoke count
DT Swiss RR415 rims/King hubs,
Enve 45 rims/King hubs,
Stan's tubeless rims/King Hubs.....

I'm thinking King Hubs but I'm open to suggestions....going with the white tape and saddle look btw.

Would appreciate your thoughts....I'm 5'10 - 178lbs

Congrats! Sounds like you can't go wrong with either the DT or the Enve......do you want carbon or aluminum?

Now I am rock'in (for me :))my RSL :).....

Welcome and thank you for going with Moots!

Over the past couple of weeks I've been riding a wheel set I built over the winter. Not the lighest, but oh-so-smooth. They are:

King R45 hubs (black)
Mavic Open Pro 32 hole F & R (hard anodized)
1.8/1.6 DT spokes (silver)
1.8 DT alloy nips

They came out to 1550 grams for the set. Like I said, not the lighest, a real deal wheel set that will hold up for many miles..

You could go with the King in a 28, DT rim (since the hard ano Mavic does not exsit in the US in a 28 hole)...butted spokes, alloy nips.

I've been riding Mavic Kysrium SL's and love them, they are stiffer than my "classics" wheels and lighter, but also a harsher ride.

What ever you do buy the good stuff. A good wheel is a sum of it's parts....

The Enve wheels are excellent. I have 2 sets of the 1.45's with different tires, as well as the 1.25's. Of all of my carbon wheels, I have to say that my favorites are probably the Hyperons. Not the lightest or most aero, but a great ride feel, and great braking. That's what I currently have on my RSL and it's a sweet combo. The Shimano/SRAM version is the Fulcrum Racing Light. Just a thought.

If I were going for clinchers, Jon's build or the DT's (if you go 28h) would be a great way to go. You are going to love the RSL.

I'm not picky between carbon or aluminum rim...I would like responsive, stiff, great climbing wheel but great comfort and road feel as well

The Mavic Kysrium SR are 1440 gms and the lightest Kysrium they make - which his only 100 gms more than Jon's Mavic Open Pro (32 hole) King build....

Question: Am I crazy cuz 100 grams doesn't seem that much...what is that about one (1) extra ounce per wheel....I'm new to the whole gram counting thing so forgive me but is that a lot?

Question: I love the idea of mountain climber wheelset for that is what I will be doing most of out here in Northern California but I would hate to have such a beautiful bike but feel like I'm getting thrashed with a harsh road feel.

Rotational weight (like wheels, cranks, cassettes, pedals, etc..) makes a big difference. Frame weight (handlebars seat, brifters, etc..) not so much difference. If you're like me you can lose more off of your body in non rotational weight then you ever can off of a bicycle. Skip a few "pops" and you'll lose pounds not grams.

Enve prebuilt 1.45's with R45 King Hubs probably weigh 1100 grams or so. 450 grams would be about 1/2 pound per wheel. You'll definitely feel that. The difference between Jon's and Ksyrium SL's (1485 grams) is only 65 grams or so. That's ONE OUNCE per wheel roughly. Hard to believe you'll feel that. That being said hauling 1 more ounce is hauling one more ounce. If you're that concerned you shoul also subscribe to the weight weenies site.

BTW 100 Grams equals approx 3.5 ounces

With as much as you have spent so far, don't stop now. Your rig is worthy of a $2000+ wheel set. Enve 1.45 tubulars with Chris King R45 hubs would be an awesome final piece to your beautiful build. Removing a pound of rotational weight off of the wheels makes a huge difference when you are climbing. Wheelbuilder.com is based out of your state in California and they would build you a nice set of custom wheels. One tiny issue is that Enve will be coming out with a new hoop soon. Last fall, they hired a Formula One aerodynamicist named Simon Smart and he will be working his magic to make a great hoop even better. You could buy a set of training hoops like Jon is talking about now and then build up the new Enve's when they come out presumably this summer. Also, Enve makes some brake pads that are better than SwissStop pads in that they don't heat up as much under heavy use in the mountains.

I am riding tune hubs with enve 45 clinchers running them tubeless (1325g without tires). I also have r45 with the same enve clincher rims - they are 100g heavier. However, I would go with Lightweight clinchers from Carbonsport for my dream bike:

Hey BM,

Welcome to our forum and congrats on bagging the RSL. I'll throw my .2 cents into the hat and also recommend CK hubs, quality stuff for sure and easy to maintain. For rims, well... that all depends on how much you wanna spend but don't think that you gotta spend a mint in order to get a quality set of wheels. Enve (formerly Edge) makes some 'very' sweet carbon rims but they're also 'very' expensive and you gotta use carbon specific brake pads which may or may not be a big deal for you. Also, are you gonna go tubular or clincher? I'd recommend having somebody local build the wheels because sooner or later, no matter how careful you are you're gonna need them trued up. As a suggestion, have the shop that's building your bike for you also build your wheels, it's just good business...

Ultimately, you'll need to decide for yourself what you want from your wheels, but I'm sure that no matter what you choose, you're gonna love the RSL, she's a keeper!

I agree with Full Motion about rotational weight. Rims and tires are critical, hubs not so much. As a hard to find data point, the last time I killed a Ksyrium SL (they're bullet-proof but susceptible to cannon fire) I weighed the front rim. 445g. My new Velocity a23 "everyday" rims are 426g, the Ksyrium spokes were 7.4g and the front hub was 124g. I did indeed love those Ksyriums, but my new set of a23/DTSwiss/White wheels have less rotational inertia, and more total weight. I don't notice a stiffness difference (I couldn't do a proper comparison) but they feel a touch better in the mountains.

Easy decision - carbon / tubie wheelset. You will absolutely notice 1400gm vs 1200gm when climbing! The options you listed are great wheels - but a set of Zipp 303s (tubie) - is off the rack ready and delicious. You won't want to ride anything else. Enjoy.

I sense that I'm heading toward being seduced by sew-ups again. I loved the feel of the last set I had, but that was 30 years ago. Jeez, I'm old, but that means I'm allowed to call them sew-ups still. I wonder if they would help my basic speed on the "Terrible Two" later this summer. I have to pay attention to the time cut-offs on that one, and even a placebo is pretty effective. Carbon tubies...Sounds cool. Do they have heating problems on wild descents?

I switched over to sew-ups (I'm also an old timer...) and have never looked back. Some decisions concerning gear over the years I've second guessed but going with sew-ups is not one of them. Anybody can run clinchers but it takes dedication to run tubulars. No worries with 'controlled' descents, just make sure you do a proper glue job, use the brakes sparingly and you'll be fine.

Using the brakes sparingly would be a scary if not suicidal option on a lot of the fun descents around here. A favorite drops 2,600' in about 4 miles, and must have 200 turns (I'll count the next time I go up). A lot of it is single lane. Sort of single-track for road bikes. With the tandem I have to stop twice to let the rims and the rear drum cool to avoid blowing the tires off the rims, but it's really too steep a climb for the tandem anyway.

I've actually never heard of heat problems with tubulars, and I should research heat problems with carbon rims. I suspect it's a non-issue.

Heating up the rims when coming down a mountain is more of an issue for carbon clinchers than carbon tubulars but I heard the new Enve brake pads keep the heat in the rim down by a couple hundred degrees over the much softer SwissStop pads.

BrianMac, congrats on the new RSL. I test rode one today here in Colorado (came with SRAM Red gruppo) - I was pretty impressed and wow'd, not that my 2010 Vamoots CR is a slouch. Whatever you do, go with high quality wheelset to match the bike. I have nothing but great experience with Zipps (303's) and Edge/Enve (1.65) - but that's just me. You made a great choice in Moots. Enjoy your new bike.

Thanks all for the posts...I truly appreciate your input....I decided with budget concens as you can imagine;)) to go with a good wheelset but not a great one....I'm hedging towards Fulcrum's Zero but the DT RR415rim/King hub still finds away into my mind cuz i like a clean looking classic wheelset...

whatcha y'all think of the fulcrum zero?

Hi Brian. I'm waiting on delivery of my RSL with much anticipation and excitement. I have chosen to go with Zipp 303 tubs as race wheels and will probably go Fulcrum Zero for times when carbon tubs do not make sense. I can highly recommend Fulcrums having had a set of 1's on my current road bike that has had 10's of thousand of kms on it and they still run super smooth and are still true. They are bullet proof and the hubs (I think they are Record) are like silk. A great wheel set and the Zero's would be even better I'm sure. They are better than good!

I have 2 pairs of Fulcrum Zeros (one pre-ceramic bearings, one post), 2 pairs of Fulcrum 1's, Reynolds MV32C UL, SRAM S30 Race and a couple of training sets and honestly, you can't go past the Fulcrum Zero's for the money. Sure if money was no object, I'd go ENVE or Lightweight, but for usability (the carbon clinchers delaminated going down Ventoux), weight, cost and quality you just can't beat them. I absolutely love them. And the 2 pairs of 1's have thousands and thousands of miles on them and they are still straight, fast and true. The rear rim is wearing out on one of them (stupid expensive to replace) but I bought them both second hand have put probably 10,000km on each of them and they are flawless.

I've put 7000 miles on my Lightweight Obermayers. No sign of wear, and they run as good as new.

I won't ride clinchers— dangerous— sooner or later a blowout. I got hurt that way once, no thanks. Tubulars almost always flat slowly, giving at least 3-4 wheel revolutions before failure.

I ended up with a set of Campy Shamal Ultra clinchers as my everyday wheel set on my RSL but am about to pull the trigger on a set of carbon tubs for racing and special occasions. I have decided on Enve rather than Zipp and am tossing up between the Smart 3.4's and Smart 6.7's. Will be testing the 6.7's next week. When I decide on rim depth, I will get them built using Alchemy Elf and Orc hubs.

Congratulations on your new purchase. I just ordered a road RSL too. Now the long wait - won't be ready until Feb. 10. I am also debating which wheelset to go with. I am curious if you or anyone else reading this post has any experience with or opinions about the Mavic Kserium SLR wheelset.
