I'm the proud new owner of a 20" YBB I picked up at Sunshine Bicycle Center. I'd like to run a set of Continental Mountain King UST tires on my 29 Crossmax wheels. I have the 26" version of these tires on my Ibis and love them. Can I run the 2.4's or do I need to stick with the 2.2's? I threw a pair of Nevegal 2.2's on there for my inaugural driveway ride and they're pretty tight. Nevegal's run big and the Mountain King's run small but I'd like to hear it from someone who's tried it. I'm open to other tire choices as well. I'll be riding it mostly in Vermont (wet/roots) and am more of an all-mountain guy than a racer. Thanks.

Stick to the 2.2's ...the 2.4's will leave little if any room for mud build up or an out of true wheel....Let me know if you have any other questions.

MemberSchwalbe makes a very nice tire. I was running the racing ralph's in both 2.1 and 2.25, but changed last season to the rocket Ron's in the 2.25 for a better mud clearing tread pattern. The 127 epi on the Ron holds much better when climbing in mud, the 67 epi Ralph is a better dry weather tire, probably more puncture resistance too. The Ron's side wall is thin but at a 24 psi on a stan's alpine rim with caffelatex it climbs muddy hills like mountain goat being chased by a Mt. Lion. If your riding style is more bulldozer than gazelle, go with the Ralph's. But if you never get flats, give the Ron's a go; they give you a great feel under bike.

MemberThanks for the replies. After some more searching the Conti M.K.'s are not available in UST in 29er. Not sure if the Mavic Crossmax 29er will hold non-UST tires with Stan's. I'll look into the Rocket Ron's. I'm honestly a little confused about UST. I've either had UST rims and used UST tires (mostly Nevegal's) or had non-UST rims and used tubes. I'm pretty sure that most non-UST tires can be used in UST rims with two scoops of Stan's but I've read that some rims/tires have a harder time than others sealing.

I ordered a set of Nobby Nic's from Colorado Cyclist. 2011 Schwalbe tires are tubeless compatible - I'm going to try running them with one scoop of Stan's for now. I think this tire suits my riding style and terrain well - I'll report back after a few rides. I guess I was a little out of the loop. It was explained to me (and also lurking somewhere in the deep recesses of my brain from a previous conversation) that true UST tires are heavier and the way to go is UST rims like the Crossmax with Stan's added in to seal. I was happy to see that Schwalbe made their tires compatible with UST rims and took the guesswork out of which tire seats easily with which rim.Posted 2 years ago # -

MemberSome of the non UST tires have thinner side walls that others.. The issue you will run into is at low pressures they tend to burp off the rim.. You can pretty much get any tire to seat and hold pressure with stans, but its going to be trial and error on what stays on the rim.. Small Block 8's for sure will burp off if using the non ust version..
