Howday Ya'll,

I'm giving one of my older brothers my Compact frame along with an Edge fork to get him started on his first 'real' road bike. He'll be responsible for getting everything else which I'll help him with of course, but I was wondering which grouppo to recommend to him. I want to get him 'good' entry level stuff but nothing crazy so I was thinking either Shimano Ultegra 6700 or perhaps SRAM Rival. I know he'll love the bike and I'd love to see him riding again and I want to help him get there. Any advice?

I had bikes with Record 10, Shimano, and SRAM all at the same time. Drove me nuts trying to keep up with wheels, etc. Switched everything over to SRAM a year ago and never looked back. Great bang for the buck on the Rival or Apex stuff.

Now I am rock'in (for me :))my RSL :).....

Im a SRAM guy too . Force on my road and Rival on my cross..If your looking for good entry level there is nothing better than Rival. Never tried the Apex but I cant imagine it being a dissapointment. I just feel SRAM gives consumers more for their money than Shimano. You got a lucky brother good on you.

How's the Rival hold up? Does it stay in adjustment? Anything in the grouppo worth upgrading to Force level?

To my knowledge Rival and Force are Identical as far as mechanics the only difference is lighter materials used in the force grouppo hence the higher price. the Rival on my cross just ended its 3rd Canadian winter and is in tip top shape.
As far as the upgrading some pieces to Force In my mind you will achieve the same mechs as force and save some dollars sticking with all rival. So Ive ridden both force and Rival and honestly the only difference is Force is abit better looking and alot lighter other than that no performance difference.
