29ner,
No PM option on the new site.
Headed up there from Colorado. Have been before, but on a motorcycle. It is a hit or miss long weekend and you had said at one time about seeing the Mickelson. Plan to ride from Deadwood to Hill City, weather dependent on crossers. But would rather not put personal phone, email, blah, blah on the site.
No big deal....it is 50-50 with the weather forecast from what I can see anyway. No biggy............................
Best part of the trail IMO. My wife and have done that stretch lots, most recently this past July. We each ride PsycloX's. Stop for a beverage in Rochford at Moonshine Gultch. Great rails to trails route. You will enjoy!
29ner,
A group of guys I ride with just did the whole thing a little over a week ago. Fun times. Started in Deadwood, stopped in Hill City for beer. Stopped in Custer for beer and lunch. Stopped in Pringle for...wait for it...beer. Had beer waiting for us in Edgemont. Seeing a theme here? Actual ride time was only 7:15 (pretty decent clip for a gravel 100+ miler) but our rides home weren't going to be in Edgemont until 5:00 pm, so we HAD to waste some time on the trail. Sure, we coulda left later, but what's the fun in that?
When are you planning on doing the ride? I'm working through Saturday AM. Will you be in Rapid City? If so, I work at Main Street Market. http://www.themainstreetmarket.com 605-341-9099. Stop in or call and I can give you logistics and/or maybe we can line up a ride together. If I could make a recommendation, I'd add a few miles and go to Custer. Its another 15-20 miles, but the scenery is really cool. Ride past Crazy Horse and down through a lot of wooded, granite outcroppings. For a car to pick you up, it's only another 15 minutes.
The group I ride with have our "monthly meeting" on Thursday evening, which will be a twilight mtb ride (finishing with lights) and then to the Independent Ale House for post ride beverages. You're welcome to join...
Chris
Thanks for the invite. Will have to look up the Ale House. It's definately a 'wing it' trip as original plans were to go down Durango way, but the weather is to turn rainy and cold. In the Black Hills it's to be chance of rain, but quite a bit warmer, so that seems to be a more viable choice. And, the Mickelson, if logistics work out, will be on Friday as I must be back on Saturday afternoon. Either way, plan on getting a few rides in - but they may be the shorter variety.
Dang, we've had an incredible fall as far as weather, now with some time off, it is suddendly to turn nasty. I've been to Rochford and, yes, that is a great part/area of the Dakota's.
Stayed in Hill City and had a good ride to Mystic. It was on/off rain - not too bad, but sure didn't want to get caught in a downpour - there is not much of a bailout spot without knowing the area. I had never been to Mystic - and while not much there now, the history is fun to read about and explore. I forgot how 'big' Rochford is. The Moots crossers were the ticket on that rail/trail - nice tressels, cool/old tunnels. Friendly folk around the Black Hills....saw your big dinosaur that overlooks Rapid City. Horrible winds and 20 degrees colder that next day, so we took off.
Must get back to enjoy it more and perhaps a bit calmer weather.
