Okay sanity check.
Seems that people are throwing Mavic speedcity rims with narrow tires onto their 26" frames for around town stuff. Since they are disc wheels can swap easily back and forth to mtb rims without changing anything else.
Will these fit with say a 28c tire on a circa 2001 YBB 26"? has anyone tried it? will it handle well or be retarded?
I am overseas and thinking of buying some speedcities on ebay and shipping them in... Can't test them in advance.

This would likely work for you just fine! I ride a 2002 YBBAIR; and when not on the trails, I frequently toss on some Spinergy 29er rims shod with either a 28c road tire or a 32c cx tire. Even with the 32c tire, there is still about 7-10mm clearance between the tire and the top, horizontal connection of the seatstays. The regular YBB probably exhibits the same clearance.
As for handling, the bike handles wonderfully with the road tires or the cx tires. It actually makes a pretty worthy cross bike when set up with the 29er rims and a rigid fork.

Back in the day (think NORBA series) the pros that were running "cutting" edge disc brakes on 26'' bikes always had a set of 700c disc training wheels in the truck. During off days they would have the mechanic put the 700c's on so they could train on the road with the same position on the bike. At the time the Mavic Speed City wheel set was spaced (and still is) to 135.
The 700c fits just fine. Must have disc brakes to have this set up work or run converters.....or Paul Stop Light brakes that had tons of vertical adjustment on the arms so the pads line up.

I have a 2008 YBB 26 and a pair of Stan's ZTR Crest 29er rims with 32c CX tires mounted and I switch out my 26 inch wheels and my 29inch wheels with no problems. Sometimes the barrel adjuster on the rear der. needs to be moved slightly and/or the brake calipers need to be adjusted a bit, but it takes about a minute to make all the adjustments.

edebolt - I'm running Specialized Borough CX Armadillo Elites (700 x 32c) on the Crest rims. Lightweight and fast. They're really more of a road tire with a bit of grip on the sides - although I've taken them on some muddy trails in the winter and they worked fine. In fact it seems as though when it's really muddy the narrower the tire the better as they seem to shed mud better. http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/SBCEqProduct.jsp?spid=42128 I'd like to try some Kendas, but haven't gotten around to it and not sure if they will fit since tires sizes don't seem to be equivalent across manufacturers.
As far as fit it's tight but it works just fine and I've had no issues. I have the same rotors and rear cassette as on my 26in. mountain wheels.
