Enve Riser Bars ?

Hey Folks,

I've currently got Moots Ti bars of course, and they're great!

But I'm tempted to go back to some riser bars (cant find any Ti ones). I ended up flogging off my old Truvative bars, so am thinking about the Enve/Edge Composite ones.

They have 20mm rise, 9deg sweep which is what the my Mootsie originally came with. I've juggled my headset spacers to move the flat bars up 10mm, but wouldn't mind bringing it up a little more, which riser bars would do.

The bars in question are crazy long @ 700mm so I'd be chopping them down pretty quick of course.

My only concern (apart from not been Ti) is that I've heard some horror stories about cheap + nasty carbon bars. Does anyone have any experience with Enve ?

"Cheap and nasty" are not adjectives used to describe anything Enve makes. I have their wheels and fork and you would be hard pressed to find anything better at any price.

I've have Edge composite road bars and a Edge cross fork, they are beutiful. Edge now Enve is the Moots of USA carbon fiber. They also charge Moots prices which apear expensive but once you know what you own are actully cheap. Moots is working on a New fork supplier, I'll be very surprised if it's not ENVE doing the Mfg. In UT.

Edge/Enve = about the only carbon stuff I will purchase. Good stuff. Well made, and the company has a reputation for standing behind their products when issues do arise.

Now I am rock'in (for me :))my RSL :).....

I ran a set of Salsa Pro-Moto carbon bars on my Cinco for quite a while with no issues, BUT I endoed once and put a nice .5" x .75" gouge into the bar near the stem (obviously a high stress area of the bar). This is my only issue with carbon and mountain bikes. Abrasion resistance is not as good a metal part. I ended up swapping for the same bar in aluminum. At least if I crash and the bar gets messed up, I'm only out about $50 as opposed to $120+.

I won't swear on a stack of bibles but... a little bird mentioned the new Moots fork are being designed in collaboration with Enve and manufactured off-shores (Enve forks are made in Taiwan). No longer is the 1.0 made in UT.

As for our new forks...

We are working with our own deisgn from here at Moots. Not involved with Enve (although they make great products)...our design for two new forks. Vamoots RSL & our standard road model. These are in final pilot production run and then we go full steam. We will have new forks in house soon, look for an update (with photos) to post in the next couple of weeks.

Jon, are you making the forks in Steamboat too, or just designing them there? Also are you considering making a carbon fork for the new Mooto X RSL?

Thanks for all the good feedback.

The horror stories I've heard mainly relate to ... lets say price conscious brands. Order for Enve bars placed. :)

Fubar - I've had a big stack on the Cinco, barely a scratch on the Moots Ti bars, they're great, just not sure flat bars are right for me. I also echo your sentiments on impact/abrasion resistance of carbon, but I don't plan on stacking very often.

Yeah, at some point I'd like to shell out cash for some Moots Ti bars. I am a flat bar kinda guy, if for no other reason than to fly in the face of the fashionistas of the whole riser bar thing 8^). Besides that, I like to run Cane Creek Ergo II bar ends and I think there is some sort of law about running bar ends and riser bars.

There is a seller on eBay who is selling NOS ( New Old Stock) Moots titanium riser bars that are very beautiful, being Moots products, of course. The name of the seller is bikermeister_meisterbiker. I have no connection with the seller.... but love their products, hence my user name on this forum. I bought a set of those Moots riser bars, and couldn't be happier. They are strong, light, and with just the right flex and shock absorbing characteristics. Let us know if you end up getting those bars and how you like them!

Just a further update, the bars arrived today, super speedy service!

They look pretty good, but I got home kinda late form work, so will pop them on in the morning and ride to work (32c /w showers yuk!)

I'll post up a pick of them tomorrow too.

Hey Folks,

Bars felt good, I really noticed the rise, but they are WAY too wide, felt like I was driving a truck! by my approximation, there's about 40mm to loose off each end.

I'll have to google up about how to cut carbon fibre now :)

The bars were reasonably priced at $160 USD.

don't use a pipe cutter... that would be bad.
fine hacksaw blade is what you want to use.

Funny I researched cutting carbon fiber before I helped my friend on his integrated seatpost. This link was by far the most helpful. Scroll down past the bonding section to find your answers. Used their tips and it worked perfect. No ruined frame thank God!

Yep, bars came pre-marked which was easy. I posted a similar question about cutting CF on a local forum and got quite alot of replies. I think its pretty easy to go overboard with it.

I was lucky to have a dremel handy, went out into the yard and clamped the bar in the bike stand and ripped through it. It came out with a nice clean smooth cut. I tied getting the diamond cutting wheel from my local tool shop, but it was going to take a week to get it in. So I just used the normal dremel cut off wheels and it went through like butter.

Some of the replies I had on the other forum spoke about goggles and gloves with horror stories of "CF splinters generally require surgery to be removed" and "the cutting dust is just as hazardous". But I think a bit of common sense goes a long way.
