I would like to build up a light Mooto for the Cape Epic. The MX RSL looks tempting but I worry about the PF30 BB, I fear that I will have endless service issues and creaking. Is the slight weight saving and stiffness worth the pain of a noise I cant control?

BTW: I have a XZ, love it, but its just too heavy for the race.

    James,
Have no fear of the PF30 BB. If treated correctly is will stand up to miles of service if you follow a few tips...

    I would assume SRAM?

If so, you want to remove the seals when new and pack the bearings full of good quality waterproof grease. The BB's come from the factory with very little grease and this becomes an issue with water. More grease equals less room for water to sit and contaminate the bearings. This works pretty good and I have done two seasons of Cyclocross with multiple washings and go through a BB per season at this point.

There are also some aftermarket units that will see the fear of the PFBB 30 be a thing of the past. Chris King has entered the market by showing a unit at Euro Bike, as well as Enduro bearing company having one for the last year. Two great choices.

To me the RSL is worth the stiffness and weight savings....and yes I'm biased....I've ridden pretty much everything we have made over the past 15 years and find the MX RSL to be a total rocket. The correct tires and tire pressure and it is a pure joy to ride/race.

I wouldn't be afraid of the BB...it's noticeably stiffer.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks,

    Jon@Moots

Thanks for the advise. One more the fork. What do you recommend for a light set up

    James,
I'm a huge fan of Fox. Not the lightest out there, but works really well and will not need much attention.

I have my MX RSL 19'' set up with SRAM XX, King, STans NOtubes, Fox 100mm, ...total weight 22 pounds with pedals, cages, ready to ride.

    Thanks,

    Jon@Moots

Have to throw in thumbs up with Jon on this one. I have been riding a MX RSL since July and it is a rocket. Power transfer is amazing, ride quality is silky smooth ti. It easlily out performs the other 3 styles of YBB's I have owned, Mooto X inluded. Not to say the YBB's don't rock cause they do, but if you want a rocket get a RSL. SImilar build, Sram XX, Fox fork and Enve XC/King wheelset. Likewise right at 22 lbs. I do have the Enduro BB and have had no issues. And those curves, oh so nice!

Had my MX RSL for over a year and a half now and absolutely love it with no regrets about the bb. My first SRAM bb I didn't pack with waterproof grease and it died in about 5 months. New one had been greased and abused with no issues. My only regret is getting gear routing on the frame as it makes for a less clean ss. I just rolled over 7000 miles on the bike and it's still going strong.
