I have an older YBB, I think the frame was made in 1997.
It's time to change the front forks and I've been wondering about changing the whole front end to accomodate a 650b or a 29" front wheel. It is currently a 26" front wheel. Has anyone had good luck doing something like this, so it's more like the Gristle setup? Maybe I could drop the front suspension from a 100mm to 80mm to accomodate?
Any thoughts, thanks.

MemberPersonally I would not. The frame was built around a 26" geometry. It would be much more prudent to sell the bike and get either a 650 wheeled or 29ner that is built for such. You can do it if you go to 80mm.....but....
You raise the bb, you slacken the head angle, you slacken the seat angle, you (effectively) shorten the reach, you lengthen the wheelbase, etc., etc.
You can put Jeep wheels on a Corolla, but I'm thinking most auto mechanics would advise against it.

I built an older C'Dale into a rigid 69'er SS with a custom fork. The fork is as short A to C as possible and still accommodate a 29'er wheel with a 2.35" Rampage tire. Even with this, it still steers kinda weird. I'm used to it, but it isn't ideal.
Since that frame was built in '97, at BEST it was built around an 80mm fork, but more likely a 60mm fork. Because of this, if you go to a 80mm 29'er fork, you'll be slacking the HT angle by 3 or more degrees!
I'd just get a new XC fork for a 26" and ride the bike as it was intended.
