Does anyone have experience troubleshooting creaky sound at the S&S coupler joint?
Does anyone have experience troubleshooting creaky sound at the S&S coupler joint?
Which coupler, upper or lower? If it sounds like it's coming from the lower coupler it may not actually be the coupler itself but caused by something else (bottom bracket, pedals, seatpost) just to name a few possibilities and sounding as if it's coming from the coupler. I would check to make sure all components are properly torqued (using a torque wrench), and also make sure both couplers are nice and tight.
Depending on what type of frame (mtb or road) and your riding habits, it would probably a good idea to check the couplers/tubing area for any possible micro cracks especially if the bike is ridden off road on a regular basis and subjected to impact stress. Use a magnifying glass when inspecting the frame to get a good close look.
Although I do not have first hand experience with a coupled frame, perhaps one of our fellow forum members who has a S&S coupled frame can offer valuable insight and better advice. Good luck and let us know what you find.
PZung,
I have never had any creaking from my Couplers, but I would check to make sure you have Teflon grease on the threads. If it looks dirty in anyway clean up the old grease and apply new. That is really the only maintenance needed for the couplers themselves. Does yours have the beauty rings? If so you might have some contaminates between the sleeves. I have the newer welded couplers. There is also a spring washer that holds the coupler on it may also have contaminates.
Good luck nothing worse than a creaky bike when you are having a suffer fest day on your bike. You just know if you bike wasn’t creaking you wouldn’t be in as much pain.

Also, do not forget to tighten the couplers every few rides.
Alright xjahx,
Do tell on how you got the avatar added please?
Woody
Jeff, is that you? It's gotta be, I'd recognize that carnage anywhere.
Thanks for all the inputs. Next thing to swap out are the wheels. Perhaps it is the quick release or the hub...
BTW, we used to be able to post pictures. With the new forum, it is not possible any more. Am I missing something?
I don't believe photos are an option anymore. Good luck creaks are the worst; I would rather have a catastrophic failure than a creak. (As long as I don't get hurt, LOL)
My avatar appeared when I added it to "gravatar" so I could enter a contest on "marks daily apple" a few weeks ago. I won the contest too!
Creaks make me crazy. Th ventriloquist headsets are the ones that get me when they sound like bottom brackets.
Just a quick update. Changed the hubs and the creaking noise ceased! Took a couple months of troubleshooting.
Pzung,
Creaks are horrible little buggers, I am glad you found the problem. Titanium is terrible for transmitting the sounds to weird places. I have never had a carbon bike but being basically wood I wonder if they transmit creaks?
Anyways I am glad you got it pin pointed, what hubs did you have?

PMP hubs.
pzung,
Glad to hear you tracked it down...those creaks will drive a person nuts.
I once had a fork on my Vamoots, that everytime I rode in the rain or washed the bike, the front hub creaked like mad. I would start out on a ride and have to stop after a few miles, remove front wheel, wipe off the dropouts and re-install wheel and only then the creak would go away. Nothing like being out of the saddle on some hot climb and having the front hub driving you insane the entire time.
Thanks for posting the update!
