After dicussing with our lead production man, we are at a loss. The comment above about the master link is valid and should be looked at in depth. Tolerances these days are very tight and will only get more so.

Where did you purchase? I'd like to see you bring it to a Moots dealer and have the chain changed out. It seems to be the next logical move.

Let me know how it goes.

Cento,

I am not sure this directly relates to the problem you are having, but I recently installed a KMC Missing Link 10 on a Shimano 6701 chain with an Ultegra 11-25 cassette and Sram Red (53/39) crank. All of these components were new. It jumped on the big and small rings when sprinting. I swapped the Shimano chain with a Sram chain joined with a Powerlock master link and it solved the problem.

I've run Shimano 6701 chains with no master link in the past on this same setup with no problems. While the KMC 10 master link indicates it is compatible with 10 speed Shimano chains, it looks like it may have been causing the compatibility/jumping problem I was having.

Tolerances are so close, it seems like it does not take much to compromise a drive train. Makes me wonder whether introducing 11 speed cassettes will add real value, or simply increase the probability for having these types of issues.

Cento,

Where did you purchase your bike/who did the build? Most reputable dealers should be able to asses what is going on and communicate with Moots for any warranty issues. This might be more effective/quicker than handling it via a web forum.

Ed,

What chain do you use? I have compact FSA Cranks with a DA7800 12-27 cassette. I used the SRAM 1099R with the wipperman quick connect chain link and when I insalled it upside down (my mistake) it rubbed. I still get rubbing when I cost down hill but it is because of the Chris King Hub. After thousands of miles it still isn't broken in and doesn't spin free when I back pedal during fast descent in the highest gear. It doesn't rub if I keep pedaling that I know of.

Hi John, Here are the info..

1.Im using a sram red crank ,yes it’s a sram GXP ceramic BB.

2.with Rotor Q-rings chainring 50/34 compact. (had this installed to all my bike)

3. DT Swiss 190 ceramic hubs.

4.on the photo it is a sram red black edition cassette (11-26 gearing) using it for now to avoid rubbing.

but the rubbing happened if I use a 12-27 shimano dura ace 7900 cassette. The reason I used shimano cassette it’s because its more quiet than sram red..all my bike are full sram red except for cassette without any issues..what do you think?? thanks,,Ed

cento1,
I wouldn't read too much into forums, most negative comments come from a lack of understanding manufacturing....I've been with Moots for 15+ years and have only seen our product get more consistent with higher quality over the years. Do we make a mistake every-now-and-then? Sure, we are human, making things with our hands.

I'm looking at the photo of your bike and would like to know:

1. Is that a Sram Red Crank with a standard GXP BB??
2. What rings are those and what combo of teeth are you running?
3. What hubs?
4. From the looks of it the cassette is a non-Sram...what is it?

Thanks for the info.

Please people, those " less that favorable " comments were debunked on the other thread. Turns out the new owner didn't understand the buildup and finishing of the seat tube insert and seat post. Let's not start tossing out rumor of unfavorable work from the Moots factory unless you post pics of said " unfavorable " workmanship.

Just as this rubbing could be something as simple as a hub that's not spaced correctly causing the cog set, to be poorly positioned in relation to the dropout. Something as simple as a minor adjustment of the outer locknut could prevent contact, and not be caused by the frame set. As we push more and more gears into the same free hub, the tolerances grow smaller and tiny adjustments make a bigger difference.

Cent1; have you tried another wheel with the 12-27 to check the hubs spacing? Does the rubbing occurr in sink with your Non-round chainrings? Maybe the out of round rings effect the chain line at high spins?

PS: sweet ride!

Happy Easter from OZ,

cento1, judging from the pic, I'd guess the chain rub is caused by the inner chain-ring on your compact setup? Does it also rub while the chain is on the outer ring?

I am also curious to know where you read less than favorable comments concerning Moots production quality, IMHO they are among if not 'the' best built titanium frames available.

BTW, nice looking bike.

thanks for the reply John, my frame serial# is 520-2305 if you need it..hoping to get info on your findings. I was so meticulous about my dream moots, it annoyed me every time I look on the rubbed area. one more thing I read some forums complaining and discussing the frame production quality of moots recently,Im bit alarmed on this,,as for a buyer perspective,,.Ed
