JON,
Brand new owner here.
I bottom out a pretty good bit. Rooty, but nothing too aggressive. People behind me in group rides ask about the precussive "CLANK". (Gettin' off the saddle and ridin' it like I mean it might be the answer.)
Anyway, I refer to a discussion:
http://moots.com/bbpress/topic.php?id=34
My weight: 178-182.
My serial # is 03921

Yo' honour...

I think I have bottomed out once or twice but I usually get up off of the saddle on the rough stuff so it is hard to feel if it is happening more often.

k29er,
The rebuild will depend on mileage and the climate you ride in....if you ride in a really wet area, you could need a new slider once a year. Here in Colorado (super dry) we can go 2-3 years before needing one....then mileage factored in there as well....if you are hammering out off road miles 12 months a year that will increase the need....

happy trails!

Thanks Jon. Actually, she is nearly new. I got it back on May 19th.

>Other than that, your not doing any harm to the frame.

That's the line I was looking for. I figure it is something to avoid in general, but I feel re-assured that I'm not doing any damage. Is the rebuild something you do based on mileage, or time, or some combination?

K29er,
Bottoming out once in awhile is okay. Have you had your Ybb overhauled at any point? Every once in a blue moon we see a broken spring on the larger riders on larger bikes. An easy fix and something you might want to have looked at....

Other than that, your not doing any harm to the frame.

Hardly ever but I stand up when things get really gnarly so I am not sure I would notice it. I'm usually in survival mode at that point.

As with any suspension setup, if you aren't bottoming out occasionally you aren't setup to use the full travel. Bottoming out all the time is another story.

The bottoming generally occurs only when I miss a transition (i.e. float a bit too far...those Dupont descents are fast), though I have hit bottom on descents just dropping off a 6" ledge, but moving too fast to be cautious w/ my weight distribution. Don't get the wrong idea...I'm not downhilling my YBB, just rocking the good ole East Coast singletrack.

I'm 190 when loaded, and the spring is standard, off the shelf. Is that too soft? Will a stiffer spring eliminate small bump compliance?

I rode a lot at Pisgah and Dupont (loved Dupont)! Not sure I ever really "bottomed out" the suspension. what do you weigh and what type of move were you doing? How old is the YBB? Ever rebuild the slider or replace the spring?

I have trouble bottoming out mine at all. I'm 160# and running the "standard" spring . What's your weight, what spring is in your ybb?

How often do you bottom out yer YBB? How bad is that for the frame? I was in Pisgah and Dupont Forest for a few days last week having a rip roaring time, but I did manage to feel the bottom end a few times. All seems well, but I wondering how many of those she can take...
