Doc Moots,

I have a friend that did the same thing. He bought a new bike and it came w/ the Dos Equis group on it. Had the 28-42 crankset on it and he swapped the 28 for a 26 and it works fine. I'm sure in some lab somewhere the other combo shifts .5 seconds faster, but in the real world, who cares?

My 26" YBB has XX with 42/28 and 11-36 back. I spinout on the downhills at about 36 MPH. If I was running a 29er I'd run the 38/26 with the 11-36 back. Just a FYI, SRAM says you can't change out the small front ring on a XX without screwing up the magic shifting ratio, but I know someone who ran 42/26 front during Leadville this year and it worked fine. Also, for all that have suffered form SRAM's crappy bottom brackets, I just received a new gutter seal ceramic, and it's Campy smooth out of the box. It's a total redesign, and it looks similar to a Chris King BB. Time will tell how much mud it can take.

Happy riding!

Doc

Stay with the XX combo of 39 x 26 for the best clearance on the 29 Ybb....this also works in giving you a lower gear that 29's require in the steep stuff.

I run a 2 x 9 with a Sram xx crank 26/39 using an xtr front D Sram XO rear D. 11/34 and Sram Twist shifts on a 26 " ybb. Works great. Run a similar setup on a nonmoots 29er hard tail and also really like it. Old guy 60+ riding Colorado Trails. Gearing seems fine. Really like the 156 q factor cranks on both. Seems to be easier on the knees and I feel like I can generate more power.

You don't have the gearing that a triple would give (or larger outer ting) but on a 29er with 34/11 gearing, you would need some pretty buff downhill to run out of gears (for me anyway!)

34/22 or 32/22 Basically pull the big ring off a triple.. Most of the new doubles are all 38/26 or 42/28.. If you want the benefits for climbing go small combo.. You will likely run out of gears on the downhills though..

I ran a 22/34 up front with a 11/34 in back. Loved it. Their is very little clearance with the 34 on the front chainstay but it worked fine.

Has anyone experimented with a 2x9 set up on a YBB 29er? What ratios do you find works the best? I have very steep mountains where I live. Any thoughts? Thanks.
