The ying and yan of cycling. Whereas it's something you want, it's something I wouldn't even think of (and there are plenty of snakes here). Anyway, never seen a Moots? Trust me, the finest titanium bikes produced - bar none. Many stock sizes, custom one offs. Impeccably made, finished, aligned- very, very hand made. Superb road manners (or off-road), precise handling, neutral steering/bordering on quick. (wheels/fork play a big part of course). You'll feel the road, but you won't feel the sting.

You've heard it all before if you've read much of this forum.

I've bunny hopped two rattler's in my day mountain bike racing. Saw them at the last millisecond. The first time - he was HUGE...I heard him more than saw him....and I didn't think my heart rate could get any higher - ha! It was about 500 yards from the finish. I didn't need no stinkin' frame pump.

Thanks to everyone's responses about the whole sweat thing. I can put it to rest based on all your experiences. So thanks again.

By the way, if anyone wants a frame pump:

http://www.amazon.com/Zefal-Frame-Pump-59-64cm-Silver/dp/B002LR61VM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321646618&sr=8-1

..and you never have to wander into anyone's back room to get it.
Plus, I can't move snakes out of harms way with a CO2 cartridge.

Thanks again everyone. Cool forum.

Not to play the devil's advocate, but there is a reason full frame pumps are hard to find and chain hangers have gone like the dinosaurs. I mean, what does a chain hanger do (besides the obvious)? Any mechanic drops hundreds of rear wheels a year, I've never heard one say "dang! I wish this had a hanger!". It's old school, for sure, and does nothing but add another weld and cost (imo).

I would think it would be hard even finding a full frame pump now-a-days, except maybe in the back room bin. They're heavy (relative), cumbersome, and about as out-of-date as a tubular wrapped 'figure 8' around your arms/back. I have a few Blackburn mini pumps, but usually run CO2's and leave the pumps at home. I'm sure there are many mini pumps that put out twice/3 x's the air volume than those, but, they've got home. Did I screw up a few CO2's learning - sure, but what the heck? Once you learn the trick....they couldn't be easier and you're on your way in literally 3 or 4 minutes. They cost peanuts and are completely unobstrusive. Pumps get you home, CO2's let you ride.

I've a riding friend who eschews pumps/CO2s/tubes altogether - he runs a Dura Ace tubeless wheelset and says he's hasn't flatted yet. (Although I think he's nuts). But flats are flats .....a minor pita.

All this said: Moots offers chain hangers and pump pegs as a option.

Now as far as your 1" and 8 speed. Maybe you do wrap your tubies figure 8 style. Now, get a Moots, sweat doesn't do diddaly to a ti frame.

Sorry, but cannot agree on the pump peg thing. What are the other options? CO2? I don't want to get stranded because my CO2 didn't work or I got 2 flats with only one cartridge (or 3 flats - which I have gotten once- and only 2 cartridges).
Mini pump? Personally, I don't like mini pumps (don't want one in my pocket and I think THEY look horrible on a frame) and have no interest in over 100 thrusts to get a tire up and running.
Don't care about weight since I live in Florida (we don't have hills). I've had my share of flats and my trusty Zefal HPX-4 always got me up to full pressure with about 25-30 pumps. I don't think a mini can match that (but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). I have also used it twice to move snakes out of the road.
By the way, current bike has pump peg, rear chain hanger, and a 1" King headset. So you got me on all counts:).
Anyway, didn't take it as an attack, and I see your point about putting one on such a nice frame. I'll have to think about it, but would get a peg no matter what just in case. And...are you ready for this...I was thinking about the chain hanger also. I guess I'll really stand out!

Sweat will not affect a ti frame what-so-ever. They clean up brillantly with soap/water, Pledge, Simple Green, pretty much any of the normal 'how do you clean a bike' product. On a personal note (and not a personal attack), but a pump peg? A full frame pump on an awesome new Moots road frame? They went out of relavance with 8 speed drive trains, 1" headsets, and chain hangers. They are heavy, ugly, and utterly 1980's. yuck....

Mojo,

What an odd coincidence - I too am looking for this due to some excessive OT that I was fortunate enough to have sent my way. I had been interested in a Serotta Ti for a while since I like my current steel so much, but about a year ago I kept seeing all this buzz about Moots on some of the forums, so I looked into them. Aside from the fact that everyone seems to love them, I too am interested in: 1) Quality...2) Exceptional craftsmanship...3) Something different...4) I'm not a huge fan of sloping top tubes...5) I like the fact that Ti is all they do...6) I refuse to give up my pump peg.
I would have a hard time justifying this much money on a plastic frame made in Asia. My local choices are carbon Cervelo, Specialized, Trek, Guru, Cannondale, Felt, Scott, and Pinarello and none are made in the U.S.. And they are a dime a dozen. I've lived and ridden here for over ten years now and I have only seen one other Serotta and have never seen a Moots in person, so I like the uniqueness of it. I've never been one for the flavor of the month.
Plus, it is the coolest logo ever. The real alligators are our close neighbors down here as you can find them in most any body of water you pass by. I've even encountered one on the side of the rode on a ride once. He was sunning himself on the side of the road. Gotta love those gators.

I've got a high end plastic full cush geared Mtn bike I use for racing. I built up a non Moots Ti HT SS for training and riding this last Spring and have recently sold it for a upcoming Moots frame build. I guess I'm a stickler for nice craftsmanship and attention to detail with all of my toys, plus a worked some massive amounts of overtime time this year. So, I figured Moots was the way to go. Since I'm so in love with the SS thing, I opted to go more high end with my new and improved SS craze. Some will think I'm smoking crack but, hey, I've never been known to be part of the normal crowd.

After repairing my rear tire on my plastic bike last night, to go for one last ride (SS Ti is sold). I looked at the complexity of pivots, bearings, cables that needed lubing, derailleur’s that needed some TLC and a shock that needed rebuilding. I said to my self...WTF. Simplicity is where it’s at, and that’s why I love Ti and SS'ng.

Make any sense?

I couldn't agree more regarding stem bolts,etc.. I finally switched to a stem with Ti bolts because the "stainless" ones kept rusting. Even without sweat, things seem to corrode a little faster where I live now (SW Florida) because I'm close to the gulf. No salt on the roads (like where I'm originally from in Rhode Island), but plenty of salt in the air. I've even had the "stainless" bow ties on Speedplay Zeros corrode. That's good advice about the steerer though and I'll keep it in mind.
Thanks.

As you found out with the pump on your Serotta, I'd be more concerned with things like cables/housing, stem bolts, steerers, etc. In the winter when I'm on roller duty in the basement I have to disassemble my stem/steerer a couple times to clean sweat/salt out.

It shouldn't at all, but any dried sweat or smudges can be cleaned off with what Moots uses at the factory (Lemon scented Pledge).

That's certainly what I'm hoping. I have zero interest in carbon and am getting sick of tearing down the entire bike every year to spray it with frame saver. I'm looking for a plush, comfy ride similar to what I am getting with steel and it sounds like Ti may be the answer.

Titanium is used for corrosive chemical lines. If there's anything coming out of your sweat glands that can touch it, you have other, more serious problems.

I have a pair of Moots, nine and seven years old. I sweated out three pounds of water this morning on my pre-breakfast ride, so I also pour sweat, and there is no hint of permanent sweat marking on either bike. Hose them off, and all the salt disappears. If it's a special occasion, a coat of Lemon Pledge, and they both look brand new again ...Except one needs new decals, it has become a "smoot" .After years of brutality the "ie" wore off.

There will be no staining and it will look like new when cleaned off of the tubes. If you do sweat a lot, and as a good general practice anyway, apply a thin coat of anti-seize on the parts that mate with the titanium frame.

New to the forum here and seriously considering a Vamoots as the #1 option for a new (and probably my last) bike. I saw a recent post saying that you really cannot do much about scratches other than sending it back to the factory. I'm curious about how the finish handles sweat. Throughout the summer, my top tube pretty much gets drenched. In spite of that, the TT of my current 18 year old Serotta steel still looks like new (ridiculously good paint job), but my frame pump below the top tube is completely discolored.
I'm hoping that the Moots finish is impervious to sweat. To anyone that has personal experience, how does it hold up?
Thanks.
