Brake chatter can be another issue. Sometimes it's better to have a brake hanger at the fork crown (if there is a hole there to thread it through) and not as a spacer hanger between the upper headset race and the stem. I'm running a BB7 front disc brake and I like it a lot. I can't imagine going back to cantilevers. I have cantilevers on the rear, but I almost never need to use them. I'm waiting for Shimano to merge their Dura Ace electronic shift levers with hydraulic braking technology for the ultimate in cable-free controls. One can but dream! Cheers.

All~
Most have gone away with the thinking of sizing smaller in a cross frame these days. Going with a close fit to your road bike is now more "normal". The cross fork, measuring 395mm axle to crown vs. the road of 370mm axle to crown raises the front end to start and then you will have the addition of a brake hanger (which typically runs 10mm). This will allow the stem to come back towards the rider and up, giving you a more upright postition on the bike.

Personally I'm running my cross bikes within 5mm of my road reach, levers turned up a bit, saddle height the same. Works great for racing and riding dirt roads etc....

Frosty here in Steamboat this am....yellow leaves all around, now we just need rain and snow....

The season of falling leaves is upon us.....must be cross season!

The sizing of a cyclocross is a matter of preference. Some people get a frame that is slightly smaller than their road bike (i.e., shorter effective top tube), and others will get a frame that is the same size but run a slightly shorter stem. As TF and gearguy said, the geometry is more relaxed and the front end if generally sets up a but higher on a cx bike. You are right that the extra length of the fork accounts for why the head tube is shorter. I ride a 56 in Moots' road bikes, and got a 55 in the PX (the effective tt is about the same). I use a 110mm stem on the PX, but use a 120mm stem on the road bikes. The fit is perfect. There were some discussions of the fit of cx bikes in the archives, and the PX in particular, but it's not certain if they will be accessible.

The front end of a CX bike tends to sit a little higher than a road bike, so you're a little more upright.

I have a CX bike (unfortunately not a Moots) that is my do it all whip. I've ridden it as a road bike, commuter, bike path bike pulling my son on his trail-a-bike, CX bike, fire roads and singletrack machine. I have 2 sets of wheels, one with road tires and one with off-road tires, making the transformation a quick process.

Size-wise, I ride a 58 CX bike and I would ride a 60 road bike (at least in a Moots sizing) and this seems to be the case in most of the rest of the bike world. Most people tend to ride a CX bike that is 1 size smaller than their road bike.

I had a cyclocross and loved it. The geometry is decidedly different, relaxed angles, higher bottom bracket, etc. Another consideration for the head tube length is that there needs to be room for the brake hanger so you will typically have more steerer tube above the top of the head tube.

As far as getting a cross or mountain...which one would you ride more? If you are going to use it to commute the cross is a better option....but you could certainly use something like a MootoX to commute on, especially if you could throw a little single track into the commute! :)

I recently avoided injury at the hands of a "passing" dump truck by going into a ditch. My Compact and I were fine, but I am considering taking my solo rides to either trails or bike paths from this point forward. I ride a 57.5 Compact and it fits great. The effective top tube is 57cm and the head tube is 16cm. I'm looking at the Moots CX offering and the geometry is very different. Do CX bikes have longer forks? Does that add to the overall height of the handlebars thereby "normalizing" the saddle to bar drop? Should I get the custom option of going the next size up head tube or is that not really needed if the fork is longer? Anyone feel like reviewing the Psychlo-X?

On another note, which would you buy first: a cross or mountain bike? I have road and tri covered, just looking for something for riding off the streets...
