Great! Thanks Jon in advance for posting more pics of the RSLs.

Full Mootion: I wish I could come to Mad Duck on Monday but I live on the left coast. Perhaps I will try to make it to the demo day at Black Mountain Bicycles in San Diego.

Will do . I'll be shooting the bikes before they load. I'll post a blog entry and show more detail.

The RSL stays are flattened more because the bike is a hardtail. With the Ybb we can't go as severe due to the fact we us the flex of the chainstays for the Ybb suspension, along with the spring and elstomer. We might be able to go further than we do now on the Ybb stays, but it's not on the plate for now.

Once the van is loaded on Friday, I'll post more.

Thanks,

Hi Jon,

This may be a dumb question but when you say there are no plans for a Mooto X YBB RSL because you can't flatten the stays - are you referring to the chain stays or maybe the seat stays? I haven't seen an RSL in person and it's hard to tell from the pic on the website what part of the tubing is flattened. It would be sweet if you could post some additional pics of one of the built up RSLs that is going to Mad Duck Cyclery.

I hear ya TF, those Rohloffs are nice, but they are a bit on the heavy side (not to mention pricey!).

I've been using a set of handbuilt tubulars (Nemesis/Record) that have served me well which I'll probably continue to use for road work, and I also want to get a pair of Edge wheels built up and mount a pair of FMB or Dugasts for riding on the trails.

Dom,

I think the PX with the Campy stuff would be a sweet ride. I have NOTHING against the Rohloff. As a matter of fact, I really like the concept and reported durability, but when you lose derailleurs and chainrings and still GAIN a pound or two, that's not cool (and yeah, I can lose the pound or two, but if I'm spending THAT much on a hub, I want top level performance. It would be like buying an 8 lb. Moots frame...)

In addition to that, having a couple sets of wheels to be able to swap out is not viable with the Rohloff. Can't have a "road set" and a "off-road" set of wheels (like I do with my CX bike right now). Well, I suppose you could, but you'd have to readjust your cables and what not when swapping wheels. And it would be MIGHTY expensive.

Dom,
Good point, I kind of forgot about them..... In the past I've had the Spooky carbon and loved them. Adjustability was not so good, but never had flex problems....

The Carbon Euro X would be sweet with the campy hits of carbon........I'd go for them!

Jon,

I know you recommended the TRP EuroX Magnesium cross brakes, but would the carbon version (Eurox Carbon Adjust 3K Weave) work just as well, or do you think the carbon might be prone to more flexing than the magnesium version? I'd like to do carbon if possible (purely aesthetics to match the record gear).
Thx,

D.

All,
So far I see nothing wrong with most of the posts on the forum. I would like to keep the e-bay links to a minimum and have them to do only with Moots style items or "hey, check this out coolness". The Hampsten link was cool. We like that stuff...it starts conversations.

Selling your stuff here is not cool.... many other places on the web to do so.

Let's put the past....well, in the past. If you want to take jabs at each other....go somewhere else. Keep the good stuff coming...we are not children right?

Dom...for you Campy 11 on a Psychlo X ....(that would be sweet by the way).....go with a nice set of TRP Euro X Mags....they will work great....easy to adjust and POW, you'd have a bike that would take you many places in super style.

Have a great weekend all....

Keep it Moots.

You're right kaiser... I think everybody here knows who I am, and we've all been getting along great so I gotta ask the obvious... what's your problem and what are you trying to prove?

Anybody else have a problem with me? Now is the time to speak up. I didn't think there was a problem. Sorry guys, but I think we need to settle this here and now and lay it to rest once and for all.

I just don't understand kaiser's motives... why dig up the past when everything was going just fine. It's almost as if he's trying to provoke an argument. What's the point and why subject everybody here on the forum to it?

There was a thing called a travel agent. It was used to allow Shimano sti's and Campy ergo's to work with canti's. It effectively increased the amount of cable pull. I'm using these v-brakes on a drop bar bar bike with shimano sti's. I love them. Plenty of stopping power easy to set up. If V brakes don't bother you these are great

Hypothetical question...

If I decide to go the PX route, would I be able to transfer over my Record 11 setup from the Compact (dumping the Rohloff idea)? The only snag I see are the brakes. The Compact has sidepulls whereas a PX would use cantilevers.

Any good solutions to using a Campy 11 setup with canti brakes?

Hi TF,

Great idea using a Black Sheep ti fork, would actually prefer it to a carbon (thanks).

As far as tubulars go, with the type of riding (smooth gravel bike trails, around town pub hoping, etc...) I don't expect issues with punctures, no more so than with the Compact. I guess I just prefer the simplicity of tubulars, otherwise I'd probably just run traditional tube/tires.

And now for the PX question...

I've been tossing around the idea of a PX (still am...). The idea of having a 'do-all/go anywhere' bike just by changing the wheels definitely has it's appeal. I also like the simplicity of having just one bike to do everything (I like to keep things simple). Another nice thing about the PX is I think it would probably be better suited for 'light' touring than my current Compact or a mtb bike, maybe I'm wrong about that.

As far as using the Rohloff 'twist shifter' (ala grip-shift) with a drop bar, I dunno. That's something I'd need to look into. Maybe use a riser/sweep mtb (or is that breaking some unwritten PX rule?).

Shifting a Rohloff with drop bars is a bit of a Kluge fit since it's a twist dial. Much like a grip shifter on the wal-mart bikes. There are brackets for stem mounting and you could of course go with bar end on the drops.

Here is your option for drop bar shifting on a Rohloff: http://www.mittelmeyer.de/html/rennlenker.htm

As for EBB, Moots had been doing them in years past. I have one on the Snoots and one on a Mooto-X YBB from 2007. For all of the slider vs. EBB discussion, I have never had a problem with either setups. The sliders do allow for more customization; you simply call Paragon and order the Rohloff slider, the single speed slider, the geared slider...any option you want. With the EBB, you are stuck with the original dropouts.

I have had EBB (started with a Cannondale 1FG, Wolfhound 29er, IF Ti Planet-X, Vanilla SS disc cyclocross, Mooto-X YBB, and now the Snoots) vs. endless sliders (Black Sheep drop bar 29er, Black Sheep 29er, Black Sheep city cruiser...). Honestly, I do not have a problem with either setup.

Dom,

A couple things for you to consider.

1. Are you set on a carbon fork? Only reason I ask is you could get a Black Sheep fork that looks nice with a Moots (same finish). Sounds like James got his "issues" worked out and is on schedule with his delivery dates and actual delivery. If you are set on a carbon fork, the White Bros. Rock Solid/Origin 8/Bontrager (though I don't think Bontrager is selling their fork anymore) are good choices and from what I've read are all the same fork made in the same factory.

2. Moots won't do a EBB. Sliders only, so that's your only choice if you're going Rohloff.

3. Brakes. I'd go hydraulic. I ran Avid BB7's for a LONG time on both my YBB and my Cinco and they do work very well, but I notice after a long time descending you get some "forearm pump" like you get on rim brakes. I now run Avid Juicy Ultimates on my Cinco. I have Elixirs on another bike. Not as happy with the Elixirs as the Juicy's.

4. Is there a particular reason you'd want to go tubular on a "mountain bike" as opposed to tubeless? Just thinking that with the higher frequency of getting flats off-road, a tubular might be a P.I.T.A. With tubeless, you can run a lower pressure without as much worry of pinch flats, which is one of the big plusses of tubulars on CX bikes.

5. Finally, is there a reason you'd rather have a Mooto-X set up like this as opposed to a Psychlo built with sliders/Rohloff drops? I guess if I were to set my bike up like that, I'd personally go with a Psychlo frame/drop bars, though I don't know if there is an option for shifting with drop bars.

drv,

Thanks for the advice, I guess I should look into Dugast again. I didn't consider using them (had some issues with their Paris-Roubaix awhile ago), it's nice that they make a mtb tubular.

Enve (Edge) rims are my first choice for 29er rims. They're expensive but from my experience with their forks and handlebars, they're worth the money.

With cincytri's permission, here's what I'm tossing around in my head, a basic (but 'really' nice) all purpose/around town/trail bike. Something to hop on and ride without bothering with cleats, bib shorts, etc, just climb on and go...

Keep in mind this is a rough draft and I welcome suggestions and advice (thanks in advance).

Frame: Mooto-X Rigor (Sliders/Rohloff/Disc)
Fork: Rigid, carbon (not sure which brand)
Saddle: Brooks
Seatpost: Moots
Handlebar: Edge riser
Grips: ?
Stem: Moots
Headset: CK
Brakes F & R: Disc (not sure hydraulic/mechanical or brand)
Tires: FMB 34mm cross or Dugast 40/43/45mm mtb
Rims: Edge 29 XC tubular (I like tubulars)
Rear Hub: Rohloff
Front Hub: ? (Phil Wood, CK?)
Bottom Bracket: ? (maybe EBB instead of sliders?)
Crank: ?
Chain: ?
Pedals: ?

Thanks,

D.

Did you look into ENVE's 29" tubular rim and Dugast's 29"x40 or 43 or 45 tubular MTB tire for that build...seems like a better fit

No plans to produce a MX YBB RSL....plus we could not flatten the stays like on the RSL....the Ybb does not like that....
