I just mounted a 39x26 2x10 (XTR shifter, Sram Cranks)) on my 2006 YBB and it seems to be working fine without spacers.

Hey egordon, any update on how the Saint BB worked out for you? I'm about to do this on my 08 MXYBB. I saw another post from you that you had ridden it and raced it... just wondering how it worked long term. thanks!

I just put a 2011 XTR Race, 2x10 crankset on my '06, 26" YBB and it works great. 2 spacers on the drive side, 1 on the non-drive. I'm also running it 2x9 w/ a 9 speed chain which is not supposed to work and it's beautiful! There is a very slight rub on the little / little combination, but there always has been in the past as well.

Chris King is going to have the same deph cups as the stock XTR, the new saint is about 5mm deeper on the drive side.. It seems like a pretty nice bottom bracket, and alot lighter than I expected.

Thanks for the info egordon. I am currently using xtr 3x9 on my 2007 mooto-x and wanted to upgrade to 2011 xtr 2x10. I'm wondering how my current bb (chris king) compares to the saint bb you are using in terms of cup depth? Will have to research. Still glad to know it can be done using the saint... 38/26 seems like a good option.

Ok I have a 2009 Mooto-X and with a Shimano Saint Bottom Bracket and 38-26 chain combo have successfully installed and tested 2011 XTR with no issues.. Putting 3 spacers on the drive side still gave me a nice chain line and plenty of clearance.. The Saint BB has a deeper drive side cup and allows to move the extra spacer to the drive side.

Julio,
Did you buy a brand new frame in May last year? If so, it looks like you will be getting a free XX crank if you use the 26/39 chain rings. Nice work. Your LBS is inexperienced with this stuff. It is not uncommon. They probably don't see a lot of $3000 frames and SRAM XX build kits in between selling $200 bikes to kids and trying to fix a worthless rear derailleur for some cheap guy for the third time instead of replacing it. A SRAM XX 26/39 not only works barely, it works perfectly with a one-year old frame. Incidentally, you should never just jam on the spacers on one side to give your chain rings enough clearance. If you move the crank even one spacer over from center, you will have chain suck issues eventually. It's only a matter of time. It may work on the stand in your house but it will chew up your beautiful frame when you are shredding a trail. I've spoken to SRAM about it and they told me that it is imperative to keep the crank centered on the frame and centered underneath the rider. Trust me, I am speaking from experience on this topic and my brand new frame at the time has the scars to prove it. I've never sucked a chain since getting the crank centered. (I had the 42/28 crank to begin with) You will need one spacer on either side of the BB with a 26/39 SRAM XX crank and you will be rocking.

So with 3 spacers on the right side I get more than enough clearance with the 38-26 and a good chain line.. The Saint BB had a longer cup on the drive side so this combo is going to work.. My frame is a May 09 Mooto-X...

I tried the 38x26 XTR and it did not worked..........I will try a 2011 Sram XX 39x26 this weekend and will let you know.

After measuring the frame, my LBS tells me no way Sram will work.......if it does, they will give me the cranks for FREE, if it does not I will have to pay for 20% restocking fee twice (for the XTR and the SRAM crank returns).

I will keep you posted, may post pictures as well.

So I spoke to the folks at Shimano and they done see a problem running 3 spacers on the drive side wich will give clearance with 38/26 combo... Sudjested If the bottom bracket ever causes an issue I can replace it with a Saint Bottom Bracket wich has slightly deeper cups.. We'll see let you know how it turns out.. Hope I dont have to buy an RSL frame to get all this to work..or do I..

Julio,

We officially changed our MX chainstays in October 2010 to accommodate the new XTR 2 x 10. Your frame was pre-October 2010 and is not compatible with the new Shimano.

Trying the Sram 2 x 10 26/39t would be the next step in staying with a 2 x drive train on your frame

We cannot guarantee that older frames will be compatible with new components on the market.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

May be a dumb question...but couldn't you run a XTR 970 crankset with two chainrings (I have in the past, a 22/34 combo) with the rest of the 10 speed set up?

How would you live knowing that your crank is weighted down with those extra four holes for a granny gear? They must add something like 37grams to the crankset. Not to mention the finish wouldn't match. Oh, and the new dyno-system Shimano brought out is only to be used together, no mix and match.

Julio, you got some erroneous information about SRAM 2X10. I can't speak about the new XTR gear but SRAM works on a 2010 Mooto X as long as you go with chain rings no bigger than 26/39. I've been running them over a year now with the narrowest Q-factor available of 156 without any issue whatsoever. I am using one spacer on each side of the BB which is how it is designed to be used on any bike with a 68 mm BB.

I'm about to order 2011 XTR drive train in the next couple of weeks. Whilst I like the crisp shifting; I'm a bit over SRAM. I feel ready to go back to XTR and the 2011 stuff looks great!

Good feedback Julio - I havent decided between the double or triple ring setup yet, I've got a 2010 Cinco so may have to stay with a triple ring. Would Jon be able to confirm ?

Otherwise I'll contact the good folks at Moots to check before I order the new kit.

Unless you have a 2011 Moots Mooto-X (manufactured in 2011), you will NOT be able to run a 2x10 Shimano or Sram setup. I know what for sure b/c I am having the same problem.

My bike shop tried to install a 2011 2X10 XTR crankset and it did NOT worked. They used upto 4 spacers and it still did not work. Now I am stuck with a XTR group that I can't use.

Today I was told by Moots people that YES, no SRAM or SHIMANO 2x10 dedicated cranks will work with Moots Mooto X prior to 2011 model!

I am contacting Moots to see if there is anything they can do to help me. I purchased this frame back in may last year (fairly recent) hoppijng to race it 2x10. It is a boomer than it wont take dedicated 2x10 cranks.

Perphas it takes cranks from other manufacturers?

Ergordon,
I haven't ridden it, but just finished setting up a new MX YBB with the triple "trail" version. The set up was smooooth....typical Shimano. The brakes bleed easily, the shifting.....unreal.

The brakes have the new SLR dial and smaller "one" finger set up...truly amazing.

I like the fact they also went back to a bb that doesn't have the little adjustment in it....

This guy went with XTR for the low amount of care that will need to be done to his rig over the season....I think he'll get that...

That's my .2
