Dom...

Please avoid the Aquaseal. It works good to start, but after time traps water under the seal, thus rotting the tire casing from the inside out. I've used it on Dugast Cyclocross tubulars and regret it. Now I'm using Mcnett Tent Sure....it's not as protective, but also lets the tire casing dry if you ride in mud/rain/ or wash your bike....So far so good on my end...I don't want to see my tires rot...

http://www.bouldercx.com/collections/components-tires-parts/products/tent-sure-waterproof-urethane-sealant-8oz

so... I scored some NOS Challenge silk tubulars on eBay. They're in good shape except for the latex coating on the sidewall which has mostly dried up and worn off exposing the silk fibers underneath (similar to what you'd see with an old Clement silk tire). The casings themselves look to be in good shape, and I'm wondering whats the correct way to rejuvenate the tires without royally screwing them up. I was thinking of giving them a light coating of Aquaseal but before I do that I thought it might be a good idea to first give them a thorough cleaning before applying the liquid latex. Since the casings are made from silk which from what I understand are supposed to be kept dry to prevent rot, what is the best way to both clean and prepare them for the sealant (for that matter, whats the best way to apply the Aquaseal)?
Thx,

D.

Nah, he's a bit of a show-off (think Fred, but so am I), always has to have the best and got a custom Z1, it has Edge everything on it (wheels, fork, bar, stem, seatpost), full DI2. I'm guessing she's around 14.5 lbs (maybe less). It's a nice bike...

Under penalty of being disowned by the mothership, I must confess that I enjoy riding my bro's DI2 Parlee so much that I could 'potentially' see one in my arsenal in the future. I love my Moots but the Parlee simply vanishes underneath you.

Believe me FM, I thought about it! :-)

Besides, I'm not crazy about running a deep section rim (cross wind). I've been happy with the Nemesis rims so I'll probably wind up getting another pair but this time in 32.

Think I'll also try a different set of hubs. Campys are nice but I'm itchin' to try something new like a set of Alchemys or Tune. I heard Ligero is making some sweet ass hubs too.

Decisions, Decisions... anybody using any of the above hubs (Alchemy, Tune, Ligero, White Ind. PMP), opinions, love/hate?

Darn you're right Domestique. Edges are sweet but 28 is the max. Sure you won't try 28's on a 2.45 or 2.65 tubular?

Thx tbill, I appreciate it. That's about the same amount of clearance I have running the Vittoria Pave 27 so I should be ok with the FMB PR.

Side note, I just bought a set of 4 Challenge Criterium Seta Extra (silk) tubulars. They're a little bit on the narrow side (22) compared to what I normally run (25-27), but at the price I got them for I couldn't pass em' up.

My PR clone wheelset (Nemesis/Record/DT/36/3) are probably a little bit overkill for tires like these but I was already thinking about having a set of lightweight wheels laced up (fate?).

I was thinking of doing another set of Campy hubs or maybe DT 190/240, White Industries or PMP hubs. I know I could also run CK hubs if I swapped out my cassette for something like an American classic but that just seems counterproductive (I can't remember how many times I wished CK would make a Campy compatible rear hub!). I'm pretty much set on a 32/3 lacing pattern. Personally I wouldn't trust anything under a 32/3 so that rules out using Edge/Enve rims (which I would LOVE to try even if they do cost a mint). FIR and Fiamme made some nice rims so they're a possibility. Forget the Mavic Reflex, I heard far too many stories of them developing stress fractures and if I use a set of NOS SSC they'd be almost as heavy (heavier?) than my current Nemesis wheels. Spokes I'm pretty much set on a standard 32/3 pattern with brass nipples. I might get a little bit fancy and go DB or bladed (as long as they don't overstress the hub flanges).

So there it is... tubular rims, Campy 11 compatible hubs, DB or bladed spokes, brass, 32/3 pattern, 250 lb rider. Any suggestions?
Thx,

D.

D,

I put the wheels on my 56 Compact SL (which has a 40.7mm chainstay length), and there's about 3mm or so clearance in the back, and a little more under the A-Q fork, maybe 5mm. If you were planning to use the FMB's for road riding, it might be ok, but I wouldn't go offroad with them.

I use them on a Psychlo-X. I'll check to see if it will clear on my Vamoots. Ironically, the rear wheel will probably have more clearance on my RSL, since I had it built with 41.5cm chainstays.

Thx Jon & tbill,

tbill what frame do you have the PR mounted? I'm wondering if I'll have enough room room for a 27.
My Compact has 27 Vittoria Pave's (also on nemesis hoops), they fit nicely, but I wonder if the FMB might be too big.
Thx,

I haven't tried the FMB P-R Pro's (the green ones), but I have the FMB P-R cotton and the Dugast P-R cotton both in 27mm on Ambrosio Nemesis wheels. I generally haven't had issues with flats (knock on wood), so I didn't go for the Pros (as Jon mentioned greater puncture resistance is supposed to be the main difference between the cottons and the Pros). As Jon also mentioned, the FMBs are really well sealed, better than the Dugasts. The tread on the Dugasts is thicker and more textured than the FMBs. In terms of ride quality, they are both excellent, and I haven't ridden them close enough in time to be able to say that one is better than the other in terms of ride. The QC of the Dugasts has apparently slipped as his popularity has grown. If you want a really plump tubular tire for riding on gravel, dirt roads, etc., you can't go wrong with the FMBs.

Dom~
The standard "natural" side wall is what Cancellara rode to his Roubaix win last year. A bit lighter than the green side wall. From my understanding on the site the green side wall offers a bit more protection from abrasion....

I like the look of the green, but the natural scream classic. I haven't had a pair, but I have had several friends ride them. All FMB tires come pre-sealed from rubber to rubber. They even seal under the base tape. Super nice that way. Wish Dugast would do the same.

The site: http://www.fmbtires.com/fmb_paris_roubaix_pro.htm

What's the difference between the 'regular' and their 'pro' version (green casing)?
And why are they green? Reminds me of my Vittoria Paves.
