Actually I took to rollers pretty quick, my LBS had a set of Kreitlers on display when I bought my Compact about a year ago and I gave it a try. I was up and running within minutes. Not too shabby considering I hadn't ridden for almost twenty years! How's that old saying go that once you learn to ride a bike... :-)

I would keep it simple.

I love using my rollers, kreitler are definitely the best but expensive and there are all sorts of other fancy roller add ons that you can have so that you can get out of the saddle and honk and the price reflects this.

Having tried them however I personally don't believe these are worth the extra money. Tacx antares are a good first time buy especially if you are new to rollers and if you use with a fixed gear then all different manner of training can be achieved

Using the russian steps (interval training) on the rollers with fixed wheel is a fantastic way of improving strength endurance and sprinting ability.

The main advantage I found of e-motion et al was only that the numbness in the fingers hands and saddle areas could be shaken out but you get used to this in time anyway. The simple rollers improved my riding line, pedalling efficiency and style and let me spin a much lower a gear on the road even when riding in groups.

People often compare them to turbo trainers pointing out that resistance cant be changed but using a gearing such a 53/12 will give a good resistance believe me! Colleagues of mine use geared bikes and change resistance through changing gears up or down.

good luck

Some answers to your earlier questions. There are a lot of excellent, extensive discussions on the interweb about high-end rollers, and inevitably the two that get the highest praise are the TruTrainers and the e-motions. There are people whose opinions I respect in both camps. It's hard to generalize, but I would say that people who want to be able to do high wattage workouts, and ride like they would on the road (sprint out of the saddle, etc.) tend to prefer the e-motions. While one can do high-wattage workouts and sprint out of the saddle on the TruTrainers, the flywheel has a different wind-up feel, and TruTrainers aren't as forgiving to body movement as the e-motions. I got the TruTrainers mainly because of the way the flywheel works--when you stop pedaling, you can coast like you can on the road, so you can unclip and do single-leg drills etc. more easily. I tend to use the rollers for more steady-state and technique oriented workouts. For power-based intervals, I use a CompuTrainer.

Regarding the TruTrainers vs. Kreitlers, they are just much more substantial, and the internal flywheel of the TruTrainers is super smooth, much smoother than the add-on flywheel for the Kreitlers.

Had a chance to try a set of TruTrainers last night at my riding buddy's friends house. Maybe my recollection of what the Kreitlers I rode awhile ago were like but the Trutrainers are 'sweet'. Really liked the way they felt, smooth and quiet. I haven't had a chance to try the e-motions yet (nobody has them locally) which makes me wonder if they're as nice or should I just spring for the TruTrainers. I'm thinking that although the e-motion's float might be nice at first I'm wondering if it might seem 'gimmicky' after using them for awhile. I'd rather have a set of rollers that 'feels' more like real roadwork than get something with a whole bunch of bells and whistles but doesn't deliver where it really matters. I know... I'm analyzing the blood outta this, I just want a nice set of rollers.

I have the "original" podcast versions (which were free). The production value of those isn't as nice as the new ones, but they're just as effective. Right now I do each one for two weeks, then switch to the next for two weeks, etc. After this week, I'll be ramping up to do each video once per week. Keeps the boredom down and varies my workout.

tbill, why did you decide to get the trutrainers instead of the e-motions, and why do think the trutrainers are better than Kreitlers? (just curious).

Also, can I use my regular vittoria tubulars or do I need to fit indoor trainer tires?
Thx.

I really like the idea of the "floating" rollers, like those offered from eMotion.

I bought some cheap rollers last year and they are serving me well. They are smaller drums, so there is more resistance than the big drums, but it still is a bit easier than riding on the road. I use 'em in conjunction with the Sufferfest videos for my indoor workouts.

I still have my trainer, but I'll never go back after using rollers. I get a better workout (since I'm using my whole body for balance as well as pedaling) and it keeps me from getting so bored with my indoor training.

The e-motion rollers are very cool. The suspension makes it easier to ride out of the saddle, etc. At the high-end of rollers, the two choices are the e-motions and TruTrainers. I ended up getting the TruTrainers and love them. They aren't as forgiving as the e-motions, but with the flywheel I've gotten to the point where I can do one-legged drills on them (figured out the technique watching this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-Shse9MT34). Much nicer that the Kreitler Dyno-Lytes that they replaced (and that's not necessarily a knock against Kreitlers—they're a very high-quality product).

I'd spend the extra $150 and get a tacx fortius. Nice software for wattage etc.. and decent virtual reality courses

I'm thinking of getting a set. By the time I get home from work, it's already too dark to ride (not to mention friggin cold...)

Been eyeballing a set of rollers (link below). Their a little on the pricey side but if I can ride whenever I want it might be money well spent. Has anybody ever tried them and what did you think.

I tried Kreitlers about a year ago back when I first got my Compact, mostly just to see if I could ride a set without landing on my ass and the one I remember about them is they were kinda noisy.
