Thanks for the response, Jon. Any thoughts on when the BB30 will be an option on non-RSL frames?

Really good info here guys. Many thanks for speaking truths on the matter. As tbill and teamfubar stated, it's about landing area from tube to tube, and in the crank department, we get to use a lighter crank (by about 100grams) and have the benefit (especially on the road bike) of a slightly narrower Q-factor.

For now the inset will be used in the MX RSL...yet to be convinced on the road. It's a tuff position to be in, we know the oversized headtube will be stiffer, but it also adds weight. When building in ti, it's not that easy making a light frame that is also stiff. We have to pick out battles. The Vamoots RSL is a great balance of those two items....stiff, yes, stiffer than our standard, light....yes, lighter than our standard and we feel very competitive with carbon in those ways. Maybe not as light as the lightest carbon, maybe not as stiff, but close on both accounts. Factor in the amazing ride quality and durability ....and you get a true Moots product that is cutting edge in the world of disposable machines.

The guys here at Moots; Butch, Brad and multiple others that get to give input on our products have really risen to the challenge when taking the RSL family from a thought to a finished product. It personally blows me away each time a throw a leg over mine and ride or race....

Thanks!

Well, besides the marketing hype surrounding the oversized headtube, there are some reasons manufacturers have gone to these oversized pieces on road bikes (borrowed from the mountain bike world).

The biggest reason is in carbon manufacturing. With the wider surface area of the BB30, BB96, etc. and the larger headtube (esp. the where the down tube connects) they are able to make a larger junction, increasing stiffness. Whether that is necessary in a titanium frame is yet to be seen. If they (Moots) increase the diameter of the down tube and/or use some sort of shaped tubing to attach to those oversized component hangers, then it might be viable.

If I am not mistaken, the Mooto-X RSL utilizes the King In-Set style headset, which offers a lot of options, which makes buying a fork a breeze. They have 1.5" top and bottom, 1 1/8" top and bottom and any combination of either.

Regarding the bottom bracket, Jon provided a great explanation a while back on his blog, but I think the entries weren't carried forward when the website was updated.

In a nutshell, the larger shell (46mm for Press-Fit BB30) is stiffer, and allows for larger tubes to be used/joined more easily. There are endless debates whether BB30 adds anything to a carbon frame, but the difference is pretty noticeable in ti imo (I have an RSL, Compact SL and Vamoots SL).

Regarding the headset, I would imagine some of the same benefits would apply. One benefit of going to the 1.5" ht would be that it would allow the use of forks with tapered steerers, like the Enve, etc. That fork is laterally stiffer than its straight steerer-tubed counterpart. Also, the downtube of the RSL is pretty heavily swaged to mate up properly with the headtube—the front end would be a little stiffer and the tubes would look a bit better proportioned (imo) if the ht were 1.5", but I'm not complaining about the RSL as it is. The RSL is a beast of a bike—a very smooth beast.

I agree with JAH that it's probably just a matter of time before the 1.5" ht shell is an option.

Sorry if this has already been explained - but could someone list the advantages/disadvantages of the 44.0mm Inset Headset and the BB30 oversized bottom bracket?

I found this - - http://www.bb30standard.com/ - - but any other links or explanations would be appreciated.

Any word on if or when Moots will start to use the 1.5" headtube on the Vamoots RSL? They are now using it on the Mooto-X RSL.

Whether you believe in it or not, the market is driving BB30 and OS headtubes into every high end segment, and I am wondering when Moots will combine these services that they offer into one package.

I predict that it is only a matter of time before we see BB30 option and OS HT option our std psychlo, vamoots, and mooto.
