Caterpillar,
The build of the 1998 as quality goes is right up there with todays. However, there have been changes in tubing diameters, and slight geometry tweeks as the years have gone bye. Bigger diameters, maybe a touch thinner wall here and there. But still about a 3 pound road frame that won't let you down.

I have a 1999 VaMoots frame that I sent to Moots to have refurbished. It came back looking like a brand new frame. In fact, most of the people I rode with yesterday assumed it was a brand new bike. They were surprised when I told them it was a 12 year old frame. I'm 55, ride about 5,000 miles/year including 5 or 6 centuries. The Moots frame is very comfortable on long rides, climbs well, and is rare enough that it always gets comments. If you can get a 1998 frame, I say get it and have Moots refurbish it. It costs $350 to get a like new frame. I have full Dura-Ace drive train, Topolino wheels, Ouzo Pro fork and an older Moots seat post.

I know that the geometry for the Vamoots/Compact changed from 2005 - 2006. I had a 2005 Compact SL (which had the same geo as the standard Vamoots/Compact) and the headtube was shorter than the 2006 version. Don't know if that geo went all the way back to 1998, though.

My guess is that, aside from the obvious differences (i.e., the 1" headtube and the geometry), Moots has made other subtle changes over the years (source of tubing, etc.). I'm sure that a '98 Vamoots still rides beautifully, and with updated components would hold its own against bikes made today. Again, my guess is that the 2010 is going to be a bit more responsive and laterally stiffer, which you would notice when you really pushed it in turns, etc. I'm sure the '98 would be a great buy regardless.

If I got Moots of that vintage, one thing I would do is replace the fork. I believe that there are some NOS Ouzo Pros still around, and Serotta is now making the S3 and F3 with 1" steerers.

The quality is going to be great for a 98 Vamoots, but know that it will have a 1" headtube and different geometry. For example, the new Vamoots has a taller headtube than it did just a couple years ago.

I did a quick search with the Way Back Machine and couldn't get the geometry.

What changes have been made in Vamoots from 1998 on. Frame Material, Geometry, Tube thickness. Seat Stays.

I've test ridden a 2010 Vamoots recently and loved it. My roommate is interested in selling me his 1998 Vamoots frame which could be a great buy if the rides are comparatively similar.

Is there a cut off point in the bike history of Vamoots in which the frames are built with better quality. This would help me in making a decision on where to look.
