I would start out on a ride and have to stop after a few miles, remove front wheel, wipe off the dropouts and re-install wheel and only then the creak would go away. Titanium is terrible for transmitting the sounds to weird places. If it looks dirty in anyway clean up the old grease and apply new. That is really the only maintenance needed for the couplers themselves. Does yours have the beauty rings? If so you might have some contaminates between the sleeves. I have the newer welded couplers. There is also a spring washer that holds the coupler on it may also have contaminates.</p> <p>Good luck nothing worse than a creaky bike when you are having a suffer fest day on your bike. If it sounds like it's coming from the lower coupler it may not actually be the coupler itself but caused by something else (bottom bracket, pedals, seatpost) just to name a few possibilities and sounding as if it's coming from the coupler. I would check to make sure all components are properly torqued (using a torque wrench), and also make sure both couplers are nice and tight.</p> <p>Depending on what type of frame (mtb or road) and your riding habits, it would probably a good idea to check the couplers/tubing area for any possible micro cracks especially if the bike is ridden off road on a regular basis and subjected to impact stress. Use a magnifying glass when inspecting the frame to get a good close look.</p> <p>Although I do not have first hand experience with a coupled frame, perhaps one of our fellow forum members who has a S&amp;S coupled frame can offer valuable insight and better advice.
