Hi Forum

I have read and learnt a lot through the forum already. Thank you.

I just have put an order in for my first MOOTS frame. A Psychlo X YBB. I want to cycle dirt road epics, long distance on road and gravel (supported touring and racing in Africa and Asia) and some mountain climbing. Probably no single trails.

My whole build follows the 3 principles:
1. Most durable
2. Most reliable
3. Weight + Easy to service on the road

So far I have the Psychlo X YBB frame (on order), Moots stem and seat post, BB7 disc brakes, brooks saddle, handlebars and wheelset(DT SWISS TK540 with Hope hubs).

What do you guys think which fork would be better?
A) Salsa La Cruz Cyclocross Fork 700c
Durable, reliable but heavy steel fork.
From my Charge Plug and my surly LHT I know the steel fork has a bit of flex which helps with fatigue, hurting wrists over multiple days in the saddle.

B) 3T Luteus Team Cyclocross Carbon Fork Disc tapered - seems to be the fork a few of you have used. Will it be too stiff?
Is it durable enough (crashing etc)

C) other disc fork?

Groupset: I thought about Ultegra first, but I really like the SRAM Red on my Cannondale roadie. Also the the wifes roadie and the MTB have SRAM. So far they all heve shifted very nicely.
Therefore I was contemplating to go SRAM red 2012 39/52 with WiFLi RD 11-32, apparently shifts even nicer than my old Red 2010.
Is red the most durable and reliable? Sorry guys no Campy for me.
Red?
Force?
DA?
Ultegra?

What are your experiences with forks and groupos?

Thanks
Hillclimber

Hi folks,
I'm new to the forum... just purchased a new to me Vamoots (currently headed back to CO for a fresh beadblast). It's a bike I've been dreaming about owning for awhile, so I'm super excited to get it built up and out on the road. My first Ti bike, so I'll probably be asking for a lot of advice as I start working on the build.

Anyways, I also have an older style clamp layback seatpost. It's even older than most that I've seen pictures of, it has two halves of a tube (aluminum i think), that is notched to hold the saddles rails. Looks like this:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-MtbyEFkvcEo/UGI1I8lKFvI/AAAAAAAABXg/MuFhGiuSdAI/s640/-1.jpg

So I'm hoping to replace the aluminum (?) clamping parts with the newer "old style" parts.

Does anyone have an extra pair lying around that I could buy? I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

We can build a custom Ybb with bigger tubes. I think what Ed meant is that the Divides do not have the option for custom. It's a very complicated frame to build, therefore we have limited it to stock sizing for now.

the flex i felt was real not a small perceived amount; enough that it felt uncomfortable on tight turns. i back to back rode the ybb and then a scalpel aluminum frame and the difference was very significant; enough that i did not like the feel of the ybb. i am now testing the mx divide. much stiffer front end than the ybb. have not had enough time yet to know for sure if it will work; the ride is however amazing. it is an 18 inch frame, a 19 may work as well. we have changed everything out but stem and bar. i will compare it to a carbon frame and then decide; but i do like the mx divide. i was hoping the ybb would work because it is the perfect blend of suspension for my needs; would be awesome if could custom build with stiffer larger tubes but not an option at this point with moots.

I'm trying to understand why you're feeling enough flex to cause an issue. I'm of similar weight and I had a YBB and currently have a Cinco which has a similar build on the front end as a YBB and I don't have a big flex issue.

Is there more flex than in a large tube aluminum or a beefy carbon frame? Possibly, although I think a lot of perceived frame flex comes out of places like you have addressed like wheels & forks, but as well as stem & bars. Curious to why this is an issue. What size is your frame? As frames go up in size in the Moots stable, the tubes in the front triangle go up in diameter to compensate for larger riders.

I could say: "just don't take sharp/hard corners". But, that doesn't really help I'm quite sure. I've heard many things about Moots and their uncanny handling characteristics - but never 'unstable/wobbly'. Did you see the video review on the YBB on switchbackmb that was mentioned here on the forum a few weeks ago? Two reviewers - one positively loved the ride, one loved the rear - not such much the front: said it was too unpredictable for his liking (I'm paraphrasing - look it up and watch).

Now, you'll note he was riding a dated frame and probably fork. You can get the 44mm headtube and a thru axle fork which will stiffen the front considerably. And, of course, wheels, tires, air pressure, stem/bar all play a big part. Now the word 'dated' is not a bad thing - it was but a year old frame. New ones come with the curved down tube and optional curved top tube. I've no idea if these 'tighten' the front end - but it is a smaller front triangle. All things being equal in the bike world(wall thickness, tube diameter), smaller = stiffer.

As far as the MXYBB with the Divide MX....they are the apples and oranges of the Moots line - wow, how different can they be? But at the very least, they are built under the same roof - that Divide (26" or 29") is a hugely time consuming frame to produce. I've seen a few, but have not ridden one - I'm sure they ride exactly as intended and have that pure Moots soul.

Again, I am (and I'm sure other readers are) very curious as to the outcome of this wobbly feeling YBB. Let us know.

29ner. we changed out the lefty to a conventional fork. no difference. changed to skinnier tires as well as locking out the ybb. dont get me wrong i loved the ride of the ybb other than when i took hard sharp corners and it felt very unstable to me. i am going to try the mx divide soon as the LBS builds it hopefully this weekend. i wouldn't be doing all this unless i really wanted it to work with a moots frame. i don't think moots does custom tubes but one post said they can use rsl tube on ybb and presumably stiffer. my road bike is a combo ti/carbon serotta ottrot and i prefer to stay with an american company. this is my first all ti so it may be the material. i am thankful and appreciative to my LBS for their support. just anxious to get riding again and not just testing. i believe the ybb has a 44mm headtube already. the flex was really there; enough that it felt wobbly to me when taking sharp corners; i use it for daily commuting over sidewalks and grass/curbs; normal off road commuting stuff. it may be me, but it needs to feel right all the time not just some of the time. i certainly don't want any regrets down the road. but I'm really hoping the mx divide will be the right one. i appreciate your comments. just goes to show reviews really have to be backed up by test rides. fortunately my LBS has a divide in stock. the ybb had to be ordered so had no way to test ride it until we built it up. thanks.

You seem to have some perplexing issues. Too flexy? All bikes ride different, but I've never heard of a Moots being too flexy. Now.....some feel it's not the cup of tea they were looking for - they want/need a super stiff platform. Titanium rides quite a bit different than the other materials - but not so much so that it seems scary. You've covered the other bases I would assume. Bar, stem, wheels, fork. I am not a fan of the Lefty, so I would zero in on that. But I know there are many riders as heavy and heavier than you without issues.

All things being equal, a 29" wheel will be flexier than a 26". You can get a super stiff set - with the trade off of weight and (probably) not as fun.

You can look into the 44mm headtube, oversized tubing - but you'll pay. But, it's a lifetime bike, so that cost will be eaten in time.

Scapel? In my years as a devout Moots fan, I don't know if I've ever heard the word Cannondale and Moots in the same sentence. I'm sure Cannondale make a fine product, but besides similar wheel sizes and a saddle to sit on, I don't think there could be two more dis-similar bikes/companies. Complete apples and oranges.

I read a recent report and it said the (carbon) Scapel was razor sharp handling, lightweight, a pure cross country machine. I would think the aluminum one is even stiffer.

I'm a total YBB guy - the cush of the YBB with the 29" wheels gives me the perfect balance of what I want/need in a frame. (Personally, I do not like overly stiff frames - road or mountain). I'm 190ish and ride a wide variety of trails and usually a pretty dry climate. For the life of me, I can't imagine the bike you rode was as flexy as you are saying.

Keep us posted.

no worries; i appreciate the feedback. i have had some neck issues and a cush ride is ok. have you ever ridden a carbon scalpel or mx divide. on the ybb i had enve carbon wheels and a lefty carbon fork. did you test a stock ybb with standard tubes; how did you decide a ybb with rsl tubes. if you tested standard ybb did you have an issue with front end flex; i guessing yes if u ordered rsl tubes. thanks.

Ed,

I have a 2012 custom YBB with the RSL size tubes and geometry (top and bottom tubes as well as a shorter head tube), therefore I know they can do it. If your are comparing bike stiffness, just make sure the wheels are similar because as you probably know, the bike is only as stiff as its weekest link, especally with the bigger wheel size.

The full cush Divide and Scalpel are differant bikes all together. The YBB has more of a hardtail feel vs the plushness and bob of a full suspension.

Again, sorry for the high jack

my LBS is checking if that is an option. from what i understand a custom build is only about geometry not the tube sizing. my heart is not set on ybb but i really like the moots company and would like to make it work. but at this price level it cant be a compromise. so i am going to test ride an mx divide and see how that feels. i know there is no weight limit on the ybb frame but at 220 lbs i think it is a major contributing factor in the flex i am experiencing. the lighter riders dont seem to have this issue. i am also going to testride a carbon scalpel to compare. just ready to get a bike to start riding again soon. any comments are always appreciated.

If your heart is set on a Ybb why not do a custom? That way you can have it built with the same size frame tubes as what is used on the RSL. Then I don't think flex will be an issue.

Truthfully I haven't ridden a new Scalpel, so I can't compare it to that. I suppose it's different strokes for different folks, but I've found the Divide to be excellent. I like it as much as the Fisher/Trek Superfly 100, which I liked quite a bit. Before that I'd been riding a 26" YBB for a few years, then an MX RSL for the last season and a half.

If you're used to 26" wheel maneuverability then you may be disappointed- it's able to roll over things, but really riding a 29er means taking different lines. My RSL is my new benchmark, and I like the Divide as much as that, but for different reasons. The Divide is a very smooth and rides remarkably well, but it doesn't change the way I ride or the lines I take- it's not an all mountain bike or a "fun" bike, but it's composed, stable and predictable.

Ride the Divide- I'm pretty sure you'll like it. I've found success with the RP23 shock at around 95% of my bodyweight with the propedel setting on 1 and 2 clicks out from full open for rebound damping.

thank you so much for replying. i think all the people at moots and local shop think i crazy to not love the moot x ybb but it felt very unstable due to the front end flex. i felt like i had little control in sharp maneuvers. i had the newer with curved top tube. thaey just got in a mx divide that iam going to try. just curious had you ever demoed a cannondale scalpel? thanks. can't wait to try the mx divide. just curious which wheels you are running? i put enve carbons on the ybb.

It's much stiffer. The front end is much like my MX RSL, and I can say that even standing up and hammering the bike feels composed laterally stiff and goes where it's pointed.

Over the weekend I rode Bradbury State Park in Maine and one trail in particular was a nasty, craggy, root-infested, sinuous rock garden. On terrain like that there's a lot of torque and twisting to make sharp corners, avoid obstacles, etc, and I think that's a good stiffness test for any bike. I was really glad I had the traction advantage of the Divide versus my RSL. Never even considered stiffness being an issue- and I'm a strong rider at 185 lbs.

I'd demoed a '10 MX YBB and liked the ride quality but felt that the handling was very soft and vague. It was difficult to ride on anything twisty as it had so much front end flex. I think the '12 version has some improvements like the 44 mm headtube and the curved top tube that should improve that a bit, but I can't say for sure.

My long-awaited MX Divide arrived yesterday. Built it immediately and went for a very short ride- and it took me just a few short pedal strokes to be totally stoked. The ride quality is amazing, and the suspension is smooth without being overly active. It'll take me a few more rides to get the suspension all dialed in, but even without using the ProPedal on it was active without feeling bouncy.

I'm running it with a standard 135 mm qr rear wheel and was very impressed with the overall stiffness- even jumping out of the saddle on steep inclines it felt very solid underfoot.

http://pro-35.blogspot.com/2012/08/moots-mx-divide.html

I'd summarize the ride as stable, smooth, predictable and composed. It's not flickable, playful or high-strung. Pretty much it'll be perfect for long rides and races. The ti front end adds an amazing, subtle damping feel that keeps you aware of what you're riding over unlike any other full suspension bike I've ever ridden.

25.6 lbs as pictured.

I loved the Terralogic, when it worked; however, mine spent too many days at Fox's Warranty Dept and at Push IND that I finally gave up and switched to Reba SL. I haven't looked back . I have found that switching the SUSP on or off is no big deal. Think about it: you will either be on a trail that needs SUSP or on a trail (more likely road) that needs NO SUSP so its not like you will be constantly switching it on or off.
