I think I’ve finally put this standover height issue to bed, hopefully, but at times my mind plays tricks on my decisions.

I got a print of my last frame which was a med size Lynskey (just sold it for this Moots build) and it felt pretty good for S.O. clearance. Come to realize from the print that (Lysnkey) measures not far from the nose of the seat. So, taking this into consideration I would be comparing the Lyskey’s TT height of 30.4” to the YBB height which I’m guessing is around 30” (bend area of TT).

Also when measuring the middle of the TT, I came up with a measurement very similar to the YBB, good news also.

Thanks for everyone’s opinion on this.

At times I’m very indecisive and therefore let my wife make most of the decisions, except for Mtn bikes. My wife says I tend to over analyze everything and that’s one of the problems I’m having with this build, too many choices.

Yes, I agree with everyone to a certain extent.

I’m basically trying to make an 18” into a 17”. With that being said, and since I have to go the custom route for a 23” ETTL, it would have been nice to take it a step further and get the typical 17” standover height while still keeping the new sexy looking curved TT.

I think Moots is discriminating against us smaller riders. LOL

I think I agree with all three replys. a. You are beating this to death, b. it is way overated, c. if still unsure - get a drawing and/or exact measure.

a. At 5'8" and nearly 32" inseam, you will have zero clearance issues. That is a long inseam for 5'8". I'd put you on a 17" without batting an eye.

b. Agree with Fubar. Top tube and crotch incidents are highly over stated (although probably not over rated). Not saying it can't/won't happen, but when was the last time a shark attacked you? It just doesn't happen. Particularily with a curved tt and 32" inseam. A non-issue.

c. If you are affraid of sharks, get the drawing - but that is a hard number and it will be affected by what tire/fork/shoe you ride.

Mojo Man,
Reducing the head tube lenght will not help too much....maybe .25 of an inch in standover. Also, we cannot increase the bend due to tooling costs...in order to bend the tube more would require a massive amount of time and money to build a new bender for just this bike. My advice:

Get into a Moots dealer and have them contact us here at Moots so we can start a drawing to clairify standover via CAD drawing. This will put an end to those concerns and next thing you know, you'll be on order for your new Moots.

Thanks,

Mojo Man,

Personally, I think the whole "stand-over" clearance thing is WAY overrated. I cannot remember the last time I jumped off my bike in an emergency situation and nailed the top tube. The bike is usually leaned over to the side when that type of maneuver is needed.

My last couple bikes have been sized on the top tube length, which affects your reach and head tube length which positions the bars. I've come out perfectly on both occasions. I think if you fit the 18" when you're on it and not necessarily when you're standing over it, then that's the one I'd ride.

I know I’m beating this to death but has anyone swung a leg over the new 2012 Mooto X YBB 29r 18” with a similar inseam of 31.7” (80.5 cm)?

I’m unsure of the stand over clearance I will have even with the new top tube profile, I know it will help but not sure how much. I don’t want to go the 17” strut route, and don’t know how much reducing the head tube length from 12cm to 10cm will help.

If Moots could only increase the bend a small amount I’d send my deposit immediately to my dealer.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

HillBilly, that's exactly what I did a couple of years ago, and I have never had a squeak from the bb. The cranks are fantastic. Anyone out there considering putting Campagnolo on a ti (or other metal frame) frame with BB30 or PF BB30 owes it to themselves to put the SiSL crank on (either with Campagnolo rings if standard, or FSA rings if compact).

Mojo Man,
I believe you will be fine on the 17'' Moots, the 16'' will be too small.....keep in mind; stand over height is not everything. It does matter, but take in account that you will have cycling shoes on that will lengthen your inseam..... Also keep in mind we are being very truthful about our stand over height. Real tires, real location on the top tube where the rider is likely to stand....I can't speak for other companies but many embellish the stand over by using a less than real world tire choice and measure further back on the top tube towards the seat tube in order to print a lower stand over.

That's my .2

Thanks,

This stand over measurement has me somewhat confused with the Moots 29r HT frames. At 5’8” and an inseam of 31.7” most if not all dealers put me on a 16.5 to 17” size frame (based on a ETT length of 23-23.7”). But with a Moots 17 frame, the measured stand over is still a whopping 31.4 (Moot-X, RSL, 23 ETTL, 100mm fork).

Most of the other frames I’ve looked at come in at least 1” lower. Not sure how this is possible because most HT 29r frames in that size are using the same length head tube, so the top tube height at the Head Tube junction (weldment) should be very similar, no?

So, is this a typical measurement inconsistency to where everyone is measuring? I guess my real question is whether the higher Moots stand over (or where it is measured) will work for my inseam length? I really want the 23-23.5" ETTL so the 16 size is just too small.

Trying to buy a frame without swinging a leg over is more challenging than I had originally thought.

Anyone have any similar body size measurements that can shine some light?

Hope I explained it well.

Mojo

I thought I'd provide a brief update after my frustration with Campy UT cranks and campy PF30 adapters.

I bought a new set of Cannondale Si SL cranks with the new compact EVO Spider and new EVO lockring designed specifically for PF30. I also ordered from Cannondale a PF30 bottom bracket, actually a SRAM but includes required wavy washer and other bits and FSA 11 speed rings in 50/36. My LBS has installed them and I have now put quite a few kms on them.

Verdict? Sublime. No hint of noise, stunning shifting and overall performance. This is what an RSL should be like. The bike absolutely rocks! I run an 11-25 cassette and find the 50/36 is the perfect match for where I live and ride (lots hills and gorges).

Finally an extremely happy camper. Although I'm long one Super Record Compact Crank with Ti spindle?

Cheers

River,
Sram makes the Press Fit BB30 cups & bearings. Stainless steel or Ceramic versions. You should be able to pick up at your local dealer.

Let me know if you have an other questions.

Thanks,

Need help with best bb30 press fit. With all this talk about Campy cranks I purchased some Cannondale hollowgrams but they came with the standard bb30's. What bb30 press fit works the best with the hollograms for my RSL?

I am running hollowgram crank om my RSL. It is stiffer and lighter than campy's + looks cooler IMHO. I run it with a compact SRM spider. Campy 11spd rings are available for hollowgram crank (just get the right spider). Problem solved. Another option is to get Rotor 3D+ with campy rings.
