If comfort is your priority the YBB is the better choice. If not, the RSL is the better pick.

On the subject of BBs, I had the impression that BB30s were somewhat more prone to bearing contamination?

Doc, I hate to correct, but while your Moots may look better with a little mud, that mud has mass and should be removed proir to use as it will just compromise the weight savings of the RSL. Clean off all that heavy dirt and dust, clean polished Ti is lighter!

Mojo Man,

Let me say first how fun it is to read and participate in a civilized blog. Truly a rarity in the on line world. I have learned a great deal in these pages from all. I wish I had more time to contribute, but riding comes first. I too was skeptical of he BB 30 at first, but after being loaned some of the finest bikes made with it as the BB I started to believe there might just be something to it. Now I own one of the last 6/4 USA Ti frames made of NOS tubing with a threaded BB. And I can say with no qualifications that's I would trade it for a Moots BB30 in a second. The BB 30 frames are stiffer than any 24mm threaded frames I have ridden. Is the stiffness from the 30mm crank vs the 24mm crank I can't say. I have riding buddy's who are aero space engineers who are more than willing to give me their two cents of opinion.

"Because the BB 30 is larger it gives a bigger welding surface area to the BB. This by its self will stiffen the BB. Regardless if you use a 24 or 30 mm axel. But the affect is cumulative, first you use a stiffer BB shell, then you use a stiffer axel and it becomes cumulative."

Cabon is still stiffer but the chain stays crack if you crank enough watts into it or crash in cycle-cross, or both. Saying a bb30 Moots is better or worsse than a treaded BB is like saying a fine cabernet is better than a great Pinot Noir.

Like you said, "Sometime a race car needs a little suspension to maximize traction on a bumpy race track," And yet other times it needs a V 12 that rev's to 10,000 rpm's. The RSL is strong enough that it can be ridden by anyone, but to maximize it's true potential you need to be an elite athlete...

Ride often and remember a Moots looks better with mud on it than without!

Cheers

Doc,

Nice description, but I’m not sure I agree or follow your reasoning behind the PF30 making the RSL faster?? or a beast, for that matter. Unless of course you are using a 30 mm crank spindle, but most probably wouldn't feel that either.

I struggled with the PF30 option longer than anyone with a normal brain should have on my custom build, and almost bought into it. But then again, I wouldn't shy away from a frame using it, not yet anyway.

Some times race cars need a little suspension to allow them to maximize traction on a bummpy race track. LOL

As a long time owner of a YBB, it's a great smooth low matiance ride. It was only after after someone unsolicited offered me more money than I paid new for my YBB frame that I changed to MX RSL. I don't want to say upgraded because that is not the most acurated way to discribe the difference between the two frames. If you are really fit, and want a rocket ship that is faster than most carbon frames, then the MX RSL is it. Why is it faster, because it's BB 30 bottom braket is a beast, not as stiff as the stiffest carbon but it's stiff enough and the MX RSL frame feels like it only wants to be ridden flat out. Any watts you crank into it, it instantly coverts into speed.

The YBB is a more measured ride, smother, quieter, graceful. Kind of like a padded seat in a fine sports car. The MX RSL is like a carbon fiber seat with a five point seatbelt in a formula 1, hang on! I wish I could still own both but the office of management and budget would have me sleeping outside.

I changed to the MX RSL because I want to go races the Leadville 100 and it is a better climber, that said the new 2012 YBB is one sweet ride.

Sorry to add to your confusion, it really is in your best interest to buy both.

Cheers!!

What's the frame condition of each bike? Are they fully built or frame only? Since they are the same price I'll assume they're equal in condition and/or components.

I just built a new MXYBB. Struggled for a bit re: MXYBB vs. MXRSL, but ultimately decided I wanted the same cushy feel I have on my YBB26 for those long rides. Tire width wasn't really a determining factor for me. I rode the RSL and I don't think you lose that much snappiness by having the YBB. I also like the bend in the top tube and the single bend in the down tube on the new MXYBB.

I agree with Mojo Man above - just buy both :)

For what it’s worth I’m 50 and a competitive racer and rider. I tasted the SS Koolaid last year and built up a Lynskey SS. For the most part, that’s all I ride and train on. Hell, I like it so much I even throw on a smaller rear sprocket, rodie wheels and train on the road.

There’s something about riding a fixie, hard to explain.

Fast forward, the Lynskey has been sold and a custom YBB SS with similar RSL geometry is on order. I just hope the extra cush works out like I am hoping, the snappiness of a rigid and a little cush for the tush.

Buy the RSL, and order a 2012 YBB, ride each, and sell the one you like least. Since both have new designs for 2012 you won’t lose much in resale.

Thanks for the info guys! I wish I had the money for both. I live in Portland, OR and am coming from a fully rigid Ti Single Speed. When I ride in Bend, it is awesome flowy singletrack and I think the RSL would do well. I also really enjoy the longer 24 hour and 100 mile races like Leadville. I am thinking that the YBB, espcially at Leadville would be great. I haven't ridden Leadville before, so that is a guess. Thanks again and keep more info coming!

The YBB is a great riding, bump eating bike. I have 3 friends enjoying the heck out of them. It seems as though one ride hooks you (at least it did each of them).

The MX RSL is a point and shoot, power transfering rocket. I prefer it's fit (shorter seattube/front triangle and smaller headtube length) to the MootoX/MootoX YBB (pre-2012). It allows me to keep my bars low, more standover, and same ETT as my beloved Rigormootis in a 29'er format. The formed stays of the MX RSL are a blessing to those like me who love fat tires (although most of it's life is spent with 34c cross tires for commuting).

It is stiff but not abusive. Plus the shorter seat tube allows a little more of the Moots Layback Cinchpost to stick out and add compliance. I've regretted not getting the YBB on my 26" bike, but I've not missed it on the 29'er. Both bikes are running rigid forks so take my take with that grain of salt.

Another plus of the MX RSL (if you are into do it all kind of bikes) is that Problem Solvers makes an EBB that will fit into the PF30 BB so you can easily make a geared MX RSL into a singlespeed without having to go the sliding dropout route.

Gents,

The tire clearance on the Ybb will never be what it is on the RSL. Due to the way the chainstays are used in the Ybb design, we have to stick to a round stay as to not create a "hot" spot on the chainstays that would occur if we used the much more flattened RSL stays. Now, keep in mind, a 2.1 to 2.3 in a 29er format is a good size tire, so running that with the Ybb affords more comfort even in a "smaller" tire size.

For the RSL you can get away with a touch bigger tire to add comfort....but really in the RSL stiffness was the big goal...still adding that titanium feel for the long haul.

I'm building up my very own MX RSL this year......my first time on a hardtail mountain bike in decades....I'm planning on doing a write up on the build and what I feel from the ride as the summer goes on. I have a pretty good idea what I'm in for as I spent a good amount of time on a "loaner" last summer....this time around it will be set up for me and my daily ride.

I can't wait to get on the dirt this year.

I have a early 2010 MXYBB and absolutely love it. I know sometime mid-year 2010 they changed the rear triangle to allow more tire clearance. That was a big concern for a lot of riders out there. I run a 2.10 rear tire and have run 2.3 on the rear without any problems. The 2.3 is tight and if you got caught in mud you would be pushing. I'm in my early 50's and if I had to do it all over I would stick with the YBB. I really enjoy the little cush in the rear.
If you are a racer maybe stick with the RSL I can't speak to the RSL.
Any choice you make you will love it.
If the rear tire clearance is an issue you might want to see when it was built.
Maybe Jon will chime in on the tire clearance.
Enjoy,

A blogger DigiLloyd has both these bikes and compares and contrasts them. Great photos also.

Summary. The RSL is ligher, faster and more responsive while the YBB is more comfortable and versatile but a little heavier and softer ride. Has a lot to do with your needs and location.

I am leaning toward the YBB since I don't race and pushing 50 years old. I am more about ride quality and comfort.

You will be able to run the 156 Q factor crank.

Cheers,

Thanks John.

One follow up question. What q factor should I run with that XX crank?

Thanks again

Steve.

normlobo,
I stand corrected. Got my Shimano/Sram facts incorrect.

Sram 26/29 will work.

Thanks,

Jon..
Just looked at another post of yours from months ago regarding the same issue. You said

All,

Any Mooto X or Mooto X Ybb pre-October 2010 will not accept the Shimano 2 x 10 cranks. Starting in October we started building with a different chainstay set-up.

Sram will work with the 26/39 tooth combo.

Running a 2 x 10 system will limit your chainring options either way....but like gearguywb said....if you spin out a 38 x 11 on a 29er you are really flying....

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,

Jon@Moots

So, your comment says SRAM with a 26/39 combo will work. Does this still mean the SRAM XX 26/39 combo will not work? Thanks again for your time?

Thanks John. So what 2x10 crank options do I have?

normlobo,
No, you cannot run the Sram XX crank on the pre-October 2010 frame. The chainstay bend and location will not allow the clearance.

So, can I run a Sram XX crank and XTR everything else on my pre October 2010 MXYBB? Thanks.

I think that I'd wait for Gates to shake out the design (as we discussed above). Maybe by the time they have a finalized design, Moots will be ready to make one!

I think a better idea would be for Gates to come up with a super slick master link type of system. I'm not sure slitting the stays is the way to go. I realise it may not work for motorcycle because of the torque loads, but maybe for bicycles.

Just a thought

Thanks for the reply Jon. I'll just have to get used to the chain and clean it more frequently..
