Hi folks,
I'm new to the forum... just purchased a new to me Vamoots (currently headed back to CO for a fresh beadblast). It's a bike I've been dreaming about owning for awhile, so I'm super excited to get it built up and out on the road. My first Ti bike, so I'll probably be asking for a lot of advice as I start working on the build.

Anyways, I also have an older style clamp layback seatpost. It's even older than most that I've seen pictures of, it has two halves of a tube (aluminum i think), that is notched to hold the saddles rails. Looks like this:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-MtbyEFkvcEo/UGI1I8lKFvI/AAAAAAAABXg/MuFhGiuSdAI/s640/-1.jpg

So I'm hoping to replace the aluminum (?) clamping parts with the newer "old style" parts.

Does anyone have an extra pair lying around that I could buy? I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Got my new Moots cross fork installed on the PX and luv it. The paint job looks great, and the 'brake pockets' work like a charm (I'm running the TRP Euro-X carbons). Another bonus is the decals have a thin Black outline around them which matches the Black decals on the frame perfectly.

Well done gents...

Yeah, I saw that too on their website (btw, thx for the link), I'm wondering if I'll need to get longer skewers to mount the rack, looks like it attaches to the hub somehow, not sure exactly how that works... their racks look beefy, perfect for the PX.

Dom,
You can also go the route of the Old Man Mountain rack that mounts under/on top of the canti studs and uses the axle mount skewer....

Can't recall the model name but it would be worth a look.

Gotta agree with 29ner, adding rack eyelets would be a bit steep. I guess I'll just stick with my laptop backpack for now. Maybe a few years down the road when she's in need of a refinish I'll have them installed and kill two birds with one stone.
thx all for the info/advice.

Those racks sounds like a good alternative, but at $237.50 each - those are expensive eyelets. I am a huge believer in specific bikes for specific duties (or cameras, guitars, shoes, golf clubs - I mean, ANYTHING, right?). A cross bike is perfect for 90% of what most anyone does on a bike - commuting included. But to put a rack on a Moots crosser - such a beautiful piece of engineering perfection is (to me) a crime. Any more than I would put aero bars on one.

There are plenty of reliable, relatively inexpensive light duty 'touring' or commuting bikes available at not much more than the cost of the eyelets and rack. To me, the spot on solution.

Dom,
Rack eyelets can be added for sure. There is a charge similar to sending a bike in for a disc mount add-on...runs $ 475.00 and includes a full re-furbish/decals.

Here's how I would do a rack on that rig.....I would have the upper eyelets added and run an Old Man Mountain rack. These guys know how to make 'em...the Sherpa model relies on a skewer/mount at the axle that has been proven to handling everything from road tours to off-road hammering....it also works great on our Ybb model as the entire rack moves with the suspension.

That's my .2 cents...

Find them here: http://www.oldmanmountain.com/Pages/RackPages/RearRacks.html

Let me know if you have any questions....turn around on the eyelet addition will run about 2-4 weeks at this time of year.

Thanks,

Not sure what you are wanting to carry, but ever thought about a custom frame bag?

Here is a link to a different forum that has a list of manufacturer's:
http://forums.mtbr.com/bikepacking-bike-expedition/bikepacking-gear-bags-who-makes-em-766873.html

Carousel Design Works - has been getting some bad press, but makes great bags.
Revelate Designs - I don't think Eric make's custom frame bags anymore, but makes high quality "off-the-rack" bags and accessories.
I had Jeremy at Cleaveland Mountaineering make mine and it is very nice.

Give it a looksee and maybe go that route.
These are all small shops.

I totally agree - the Moots crosser is a great, great commuter - but no racks. Anything but a rack. IMO, if you need more than a messenger bag to commute, get a commuter.

Jon,

Can rack eyelets (upper & lower) be retrofitted to an existing frame?
I'm using the PX for commuting and would like to mount a rear rack to the bike.
Can this be done and what are the cost involved (will also need a Moots frame shipping container).
Thanks,

I haven't run that combo but the Nobby Nic (NoNi) sounds like a great option if you want something a bit more aggressive up front. If things are pretty dry and aren't too loose, you may be a bit overgunned with the NoNi up front unless you really like to throw the bike around. Plenty of options for the rear depending on whether you're racing or trail riding (Ikon, Racing Ralph, Rocket Ron, XDX, Race King, etc.). I'll stick with my Ikon front and rear. If I need a bit more up front I'd look at the NoNi.

Thoughts on a Nobby Nic front with the Maxxis Icon EXO 2.2 rear? I'll not be riding in super muddy or sloppy conditions and mostly XC/mild single track...

I'm a fan of the 2.1 Bonty XDX, though I think they are done making it. I have a Bonty 29.2 (2.1) on there now that is doing OK...not as high on volume as the XDX was, nor do I think it will be as tough. I ran the 29-3 rear tire when I first go the bike...very fast, narrow, low volume 2.0 tire.

I'm in search of *the* rear tire for this bike.

I've been running Maxxis Ikon EXO's and absolutely love them. They're 2.2's, have huge volume, and go head to head with the Racing Ralph's (RaRa's). My RaRa's lasted about two months and my Ikons are showing little if any wear and are looking really great after about 8 months of hard riding and racing. I'm pretty shocked actually but I'm told it's because of the 3C compond. A lot of people complain about the price but if you look around you can find them for about $50. Set up tubeless easily on my Stans Crests.

I tried a Racing Ralph 2.25 in the rear and it fit, but almost zero clearance. I'm now running a Hutchinson Python 2.1 and I'm very happy with it.

Not sure my Nobby Nic 29x2.25 has enough clearance on the "2011" MootoX YBB. What are you guys running for a rear tire?

These Vittoria's are the "open tubulars". Very supple clinchers that feel a lot like sew-ups. The wide rims are to make them feel even closer.

I was planning to do the build, but with a little searching, I found all the parts in one place, and it turns out that they had a package deal and included the build. Saved me two hours of psychotically careful spoke tensioning. Nice of them.

Off to a day on the bike...

Hi Jeff, from one Clydesdale to another, welcome back and thanks for the info.

Anybody have experience with Sapim spokes? I've been eyeballing their CX-Ray bladed spokes. I'm just wondering if using a bladed spoke might make the wheel ride too harsh as compared to a double butted spoke (or is that all just a bunch of nonsense?).

Hey Domestique -- Clydesdale riders should check out Rolf Prima Vigor RS or Echelon wheels - extremely strong, stiff, nice aero benefit, and built on those sweet White Industries hubs. Personal experience for several years @ 270 lbs has been excellent.

Hey Dave, nice sneakers, did you lace em up yourself? Those White hubs are sweet, can't go wrong with them, same goes for the 25 EVO-CX, I run the same tubulars on my Compact when the roads finally clear up after Winter. Since the roads around here are still kinda crappy I have the 27 Pave's on there, it's a little tight out back but still ok although I wouldn't want to try and go any bigger.

I'm going to have Scott (my LBS) build up another set of wheels for my upcoming PX so I can use my current wheels (Nemesis/Record) for road work and then have another set for trails. He's pretty stoked about the new Velocity 'Major Tom' rim (23mm) so I might go with a set of them. Should be sweet with a set of 32 FMB. Then again, I'm pretty happy with my Nememsis rims so maybe I'll just have him do another set of those, dunno yet. I'm also still undecided about which hubs, maybe another set of Records, again dunno. Spokes are pretty simple for me... at 250 lbs I don't have too many options, I need my wheels to be 'very' strong so it's your basic old school classic 36/14/3 pattern with brass nipples. I'm thinking I'd like try 14/15 DB to add a little bit of 'liveliness' to the wheels.

This is actually a reply to a comment in the "CR to race" thread, but it got off-topic, and then a little long-winded so Dom...

My new wheels feel like a new set of sneakers. I cracked another Ksyrium while truing it so I decided something more conventional, and repairable with obtainable parts makes a lot more sense. I'm also fond of biggish tires for my favorite less-than-perfect roads around here. HED makes a bunch of wheels with 23mm wide rims, that supposedly make tires act a size bigger and handle better, and the idea makes sense, especially since 23mm tires are a lot easier to find than 25's or 26.5's. So after a bit more research (obsession may be a better term) I decided on:

1. Velocity a23 rims (23mm wide, 426g)
2. White Industries hubs (h2&h3)
3. DT spokes, double butted, brass nipples
4. Front 24H, 2-cross, Rear 28H, 3-cross.

I've got them shod with 25mm Vittoria EVO-CX tires right now, and they measure out as 26.5mm on the rims. They climb just like my old Ksyrium ES's, and feel better on tight handling downhills. I'll try the 23mm tires at some point, but tomorrows ride will have 11,000 feet of descending so the sweet handling will help me catch the faster climbers. These should be perfect for someone who does "not-particularly-fast double centuries with lots of climbing on roads that are far too convoluted" to need anything especially aero.
