Did more digging...you should be good to go. The Zirkel will take pretty much any ring, the MX RSL will be a little limited on max ring size, but being a 29 you shouldn't need to go huge.

Thanks,

It would be super hard NOT to pick the SL. You are going about it the right way, based on Fit. I know I have said it before but I can't tell a bit of difference between the SL and Standard VaMoots. Good luck with the decision I wish we all had your problems.

Hi Jon,
I've got a Vamoots CR and also a new old stock Compact SL (S/N 51M6833) and am trying to track down the build sheet for the SL.

I can only afford to keep one, (and will need to sell one :-( and need the STA+HTA+fork rake etc before making a decision which frame to sell and which to keep and build - and ride !

I've mailed Moots for this on a number of occasions but got no response - hence posting here

Please can you post it here or mail it to jonjones13 AT talk21 DOT com

Thanks

cento1,
It comes down to the longer head tubes..... and a couple of other points...

If you look back at the geometry of the Vamoots the head tubes have gotten longer over time because more riders requested this change. We listened and started making them stock with that longer head tube so riders could avoid the massive 100mm of spacers under the stem and avoid going custom.

But, along with making the head tubes longer we have to bring the top tube up the head tube to avoid having too much protrusion above the top tube. If you get much more than 2.5 above the top edge of the top tube, the head tube wants to bow when welded....this makes head set adjustments bad and we believe an overall bad way to build bikes. So, we bring the top tube up on the head tube which gives it more slope.

It's a hard one to get around....if we wanted to keep the top tube level, we could increase the seat tube length...but then you start to lose stand over height....not something that is good either.

We try to balance the relationship all of these have with each other to build a great riding bike, without sacrificing our build principals along the way.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,

John, but why you've changed the TT slope on you stock 2012 line up??,the 52 for example went to 3.6 deg. what’s the reason behind that and when did the changes take effect? I know some still wanted the traditional classic bike look nowadays,, thanks

Cento1,
Satellite is correct....the Vamoots never had a true level top tube. The reasons for this are....longer head tubes require a bit of slope in order to not have too much head tube above the top tube and the second reason is looks....If you have a level top tube the bike almost looks like it slopes forward. It's an eye trick for sure.

So yes, most of the Vamoots of that era have about 2 degrees of slope.

Thanks,

My VaMoots are larger frames 56 (2006) and 57.5 (2004) they both have a 2 degree slope. The VaMoots never had a true level top tube but the VaMoots is a lot flatter than the Compact.

Roo

If your 11 spd rings are 53/39 t then they will be a standard campy 135mm BCD.

You will not be able to use you Campy chainring bolts because one of them bolts to the backside of the crank arm. You could use 4 of the 5 campy bolts but you will need one other bolt...you can use 5 bolts from a shimano or sram crank or any aftermarket versions.

Hi Roo

I have a Cannondale Si SL on my RSL running Campy SR 11 speed. Mine is currently running compact and I am using FSA rings. If you go 53/39 and want to use genuine Campy SR 11 rings then you can get (as -drv- said) a 135 spider to suit. They don't make a spider to suit genuine Campy 11 speed compact rings. For good info check out the Dr Cannondale (Germany) website - they sell all you need including 135 spider. I bought a complete crank from them with a Pf30 bb and it included all stuff needed. Be sure to specify EVO parts because the PF30 lockring is different to standard. Spindle is 104mm - standard road. The Cannondale EVO is PF30 not BB30. The "Cannondale" pf30 bb is actually made by SRAM but includes all correct Cannondale bits including wavy washer etc.

Enjoy!

ROO

You can buy Campy 135mm BCD spiders that will work for a 53/39 set up. Not sure about a Campy 110 (plus one 112.5)mm BCD, but this will really limit your chainring choice (I had to have one custom made for my cross bike). Many manufactures of aftermarket rings (think Praxis) make Campy 11spd compatible rings in 110 and 130mm BCDs....this is the route I'm going this time around. It gives you many more options for rings in the end (particularly if Shim and Sram go 11 spd...which isn't far fetched for the near future).

As for a PF30 BB Sram (truvativ) makes a solid version in steel or ceramic. Other options (like HSC) are out there as well.

Not a good idea all around....bad geometry, messing up a perfect bike....the cross gods would roll in their graves.

Thanks,

I have a Smoothie that I no longer ride that I would consider selling if you're still interested. 18" full ti. The stock 5th element shock was replaced with a Fox RP3 from PUSH. Currently set-up as a 69er with a White Brothers rigid fork, but i have a PUSH'd Fox Float if wanted. Haven't been actively looking to sell, but it is SUCH a waste to have such a beautiful bike not being ridden. I have converted to 29" wheels for MTB. pics easily available upon request. Currently set-up with a really nice 1x9 set-up.

"Having suspension fork on road bikes will not be able to take the additional loads created by the fork"

It will mess up the geometry, aesthetically it is wrong, the frame may not be able to take the additional loads created by the fork, hardly anyone builds forks with canti-post mounts anymore, so unless it is a disc frame, the "individual" will have to use a disc in the front and a canti in the back, which adds a new wheel (or at least a hub and wheel build) into the equation.

My question is why? Why does this person want to do this? Personally, it bugs me when people get a SWEET ride like a Psychlo and then put flat bars on it or bastardize it in some way. (Again, I want to reiterate it is a personal problem.)

Not long ago there was a Moots Smoothie for sale on eBay and it was going cheap. I thought I'd check it out for my wife. When I opened the ad, I found this bike with a high-rise stem, HUGE comfort bike style riser bars, bar ends that pointed to the sky, a giant comfort bike saddle and a post mounted bike rack. AAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHH. Why? Why just not get a comfort bike? Why buy a Corvette ZO1 and festoon it with a roof rack and snow and ice tires? Why not get the right tool for the job? So, if this individual wants more comfort, why not get a mountain bike (with bigger, lower pressure tires and a suspension fork) or a comfort bike?

Sorry for the rant. Hopefully this will help persuade this individual.

So there is an individual who wants to know why putting a suspension fork on his cross bike is bad. I gave him my reasons which amounted to bad geometry. Anybody have anything else they would like to add. This is a PsychloX. Thanks
