I have a 2004 Litespeed Classic with Ultegra. It has maybe 4000 miles on it, if that. I'm mainly a runner guy that uses it for cross training. I mostly do the mountain bike to avoid all the cars in LA. I would like to upgrade myself but I'm afraid a Vamoots would be wasted on someone like me. I think I would get more use out of the YBB 29er though.

i agree...

it seems many "users" ride bigger frames with shorter stems...if u have LOOOOOnger Arms and taller upperbody a longer stem is a good way to try...........the bike handles more radical then and a too big frame gives me a lame bikefeel
u can always ask at moots to get 1 cm extra on the HT without extracharge as far as i know........

my 56 kits hit the point perfectly for my 6.0" shorter legs specs
my feels only....

I'm 5'10" almost 5'11" and I ride a 55cm with a 110mm stem. I think the 56 would work for you too. It depends on your riding style. I like to have a huge drop from saddle to handlebars to have a race/aggressive position and I like having a smaller frame to throw around. I considered getting a 54cm with a longer stem but I decided to play it safe with a 55cm. I would rather go small than large. I had a 57cm Trek 2100 and hated how laid out I felt on it. You'll notice a big difference with a smaller frame and longer stem. You won't regret it. Go to a shop and get a professional fit or even test ride different sized frames. The bikes you test may not even come close to the ride quality of a Moots but you will at least get the feel of sizing. Just my little 2cents. Good luck and enjoy your new ride when you get it.

WIll you notice a difference? Well, sure - like a 2012/2013 car and a 2000 car. Everything is 'better'. I don't know the Classic per se, but the Moots will have a stiffer platform (bigger diameter tube set, 1 1/8" head tube, much beefier dropouts). Bigger steerer on the fork, etc., etc. I would think a much snappier feeling ride. Also, I assume you'll be getting new groupset, wheels - light years beyond stuff of 12 years ago. New wheels as well? Again, same thing.

Welded bottle bosses, welded seat binder, press fit and welded seat tube insert - don't add a thing to performance, but a much better alternative to what is on the Litespeed.

It'll be like going from an old school 'box' tv to a flat screen high def model I would think. They're both t.v.'s, but but there is no question which you'd rather watch.

I cannot comment on a performance difference, but I can tell you that I absolutely love my new Vamoots. It's super comfortable, very responsive, and just a joy to ride.
I would personally think that a 58 may be a little too long for you. I'm 6'-0" and got a 58 (which has a 57 horizontal TT) and use a 100mm stem and feel as though the fit is perfect. You're 2" shorter than me and even though you did say that you have slightly longer arms, 2" is still a decent amount in the world of bike fit. I should note that I like to ride fairly upright and went with the longer 18cm head tube and am still using 30mm of spacers. I also had to consider saddle to bar drop because I only like about a 1.5cm drop - I could have gone with a 56 and used a 110 stem, but I would have lost yet another cm in the head tube height which would have added even more spacers.
Many people on this forum know a lot more than I do, but as a general rule I would think than many would say a 58 might be a little long for someone 5'-10". Just my 2 cents.
You can also use the Moots online custom form to take all your basic measurements and have your dealer send them to Moots. I did that and they came back with me fitting well on a stock 58 and I think it was the right choice.
Here's the link to the form:

I am contemplating trading up to a Moots Vamoots from my 2000 Litespeed Classic which has close to 50,000 miles on it. Where I hesitate is whether I will notice any difference in ride quality and performance? I have a 57cm and not sure whether to go up or down-56 or 58. I stand 5"10" with slightly longer than average arm and torso length for my height.

Hi Forum

I have read and learnt a lot through the forum already. Thank you.

I just have put an order in for my first MOOTS frame. A Psychlo X YBB. I want to cycle dirt road epics, long distance on road and gravel (supported touring and racing in Africa and Asia) and some mountain climbing. Probably no single trails.

My whole build follows the 3 principles:
1. Most durable
2. Most reliable
3. Weight + Easy to service on the road

So far I have the Psychlo X YBB frame (on order), Moots stem and seat post, BB7 disc brakes, brooks saddle, handlebars and wheelset(DT SWISS TK540 with Hope hubs).

What do you guys think which fork would be better?
A) Salsa La Cruz Cyclocross Fork 700c
Durable, reliable but heavy steel fork.
From my Charge Plug and my surly LHT I know the steel fork has a bit of flex which helps with fatigue, hurting wrists over multiple days in the saddle.

B) 3T Luteus Team Cyclocross Carbon Fork Disc tapered - seems to be the fork a few of you have used. Will it be too stiff?
Is it durable enough (crashing etc)

C) other disc fork?

Groupset: I thought about Ultegra first, but I really like the SRAM Red on my Cannondale roadie. Also the the wifes roadie and the MTB have SRAM. So far they all heve shifted very nicely.
Therefore I was contemplating to go SRAM red 2012 39/52 with WiFLi RD 11-32, apparently shifts even nicer than my old Red 2010.
Is red the most durable and reliable? Sorry guys no Campy for me.
Red?
Force?
DA?
Ultegra?

What are your experiences with forks and groupos?

Thanks
Hillclimber

I've had this video bookmarked for a long time. It's one of my favourite videos and reminds me why I cherish my Moots and why I bought a Vamoots in 2005. I watch it probably once a month, when I take a break from work. Love the music.
Just wanted to share.

Hi folks,
I'm new to the forum... just purchased a new to me Vamoots (currently headed back to CO for a fresh beadblast). It's a bike I've been dreaming about owning for awhile, so I'm super excited to get it built up and out on the road. My first Ti bike, so I'll probably be asking for a lot of advice as I start working on the build.

Anyways, I also have an older style clamp layback seatpost. It's even older than most that I've seen pictures of, it has two halves of a tube (aluminum i think), that is notched to hold the saddles rails. Looks like this:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-MtbyEFkvcEo/UGI1I8lKFvI/AAAAAAAABXg/MuFhGiuSdAI/s640/-1.jpg

So I'm hoping to replace the aluminum (?) clamping parts with the newer "old style" parts.

Does anyone have an extra pair lying around that I could buy? I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

sorry. was unable to access forum for last several days. changed out lefty carbon fork to a standard rockshox fork; no difference. put lefty back on and locked out ybb; not much difference. shop is now going to change out wheels from enve carbon to an aluminum set. will see. i am considering trying a divide mx frame to see if stiffer. for me there is too much flex in the front end of the frame. maybe a custom frame with stiffer tubes will be the answer.

jon,

my shop is in charlotte. ben the owner has spent time on phone with cory discussing this issue. build: lefty carbon fork, enve carbon wheels, sram xo 2 x 10. i weigh 220 lbs and am 5'10". this is a medium frame. i also have a 29" inseam. running continental race light tires. frame has the curved top tube. so far we have switched to a conventional fork with no difference. after bens chat with cory today we locked out the ybb to see if that makes a difference. cory said that ybb can cause this problem of flexure. was not able to test today. we also today put longer stem to get more weight forward. i am wondering if the geometry is off with this stock frame and will always be an issue for me. maybe need custom build. also would the full suspension divide be less susceptible to this front end flex? thanks for all your feedback in advance. it is a great looking bike; however i don't feel comfortable on it while riding at least 1/2 the time. i use it mainly for commuting on sidewalks, grass and light trails. i have had several neck surgeries in the last year hence the need for rear suspension. ed

dentifly,
In the current 29er models we have gone to 44mm head tubes, and larger tubing both in the top tube/down tube and also have the added stiffness by running a 30.9 post in the RSL models, which when combined really tighten up the bike. The 26'' wheel bikes have not gone through those changes as of yet.

From what you describe above I would say it's a combination of very light parts(wheels)....what else is it built with?..., rider weight and tubing size that are making you feel what you are feeling. How tall are you?

What shop did you order it through?

wow! I hope this is an isolated case. I've got a new 19" Mooto X YBB on the way, should be here next week. I weigth a tad less at 185. For what its worth, I demo'd a 19" YBB during a local front range demo day and did not notice any flex coming off my 19" MXZ.

However, I did notice that the steering was a little quicker or snappy. Once I adjusted, it was no big deal. I took the bike up to speed ( big ring...down hill) and found it very stable, even under hard corner ( threshold) braking. It railed corners that I may have been bushwacking if I were on the MXZ.

Maybe get your weight back over the rear wheel a bit more. Less stem length with a layback post.

just built up a new stock 17" ybb. carbon lefty fork and enve carbon wheels. my concern is how unstable the bike feels. it has a lot of lateral flex from headtube back to most of top tube. it is a very unsettled ride; almost scary. shop tried switching to a conventional fork but no difference. anyone have similar issue. i weigh 215 lbs so also wondering if need stiffer tubing. thanks for any input.

Mike,
Good questions and I believe I have some good answers for you.

29er is correct is saying you should match you PX fit to that of your Vamoots. Some people say if sizing a cross bike you go down a full "size".....I don't subscribe to this method myself. I like to use my cross bike for everything, including racing, dirt roads, road rides, commuting... There are a couple of things to keep in mind....

If you are loving the current model Vamoots in a 56cm you would have a 56cm top tube. Easy enough to match that top tube lenght in what we call our 55cm PX. The head tube however is shorter, which you have to understand you will be adding a 1cm cable hanger under the stem right off the bat. That will get you closer to your fit you have now, but not exact....You could go up a size in head tube to the 14.5cm out of the 56. Again, you would run a cable hanger under the stem, or even if you do not and you go the route of the crown mounted stop, you will have a sane amount of spacers under stem to achieve the same fit. The 55cm PX would have a 55cm c-t seat tube which is not a huge concern....

Tire clearance....this all depends on the maker of the tire....a 34c tubular fits great, now I now most don't run tubulars for general riding, but this tire is very large and a good gauge of max capacity of the PX which will let you run most 34c to 35c clinchers without worry.

For the riding you are describing I could not think of a better bike for the job. I know some of those roads in northern Oklahoma as I went to OSU back in the day....

I hope this helps out... just writing about this type of riding has me looking out the window feeling the need to bag a huge gravel adventure....soon.

Thanks,

This is an easy one and I hope Jon concours - don't get a 'size' bike, get the right sized bike. If you are comfortable on your current 56, match the top tube and head tube to the comparible crosser. (Which I believe you will find as a size smaller in the VaMoots). Comparing the Cross to the VaMoots is tricky as the cross (either model) is a performance oriented frame (long and low) - the VaMoots is more laid back for sure. A better comparison would be the CR or RSL. I think if you look at those two models, the specs will be much more 'even'.

Reading your description, I have absolutely no doubt a cross bike would be great fun on those roads - they scream 'cyclocross'.

I've no idea max tire clearance - a 34mm for sure - don't know about more than that.

Moots will put a longer head tube on (within reason - call them) for no extra. No change in geometry....just taller. Any geometry change inccurs an upcharge.

The wheelbase makes a huge difference, they are definately longer than any roadie. Canti studs or disc mounts, top tube routed cables, 's' bend stays, with or without the chainstay bridge, standard/BB30 (upcharge), 1 1/8" or 44mm headtube (upcharge on the regular cross???), DI2 routing if wanted. They rock - cross bikes do it all and Moots do it even better.

Back to the size - easy, match your VaMoots to what is available 'stock'. Any minor discrepancy is an easy saddle position, stem difference, etc. Also, look at the BB drop - that can play a big role in feel on the crosser vs a roadie.
Usually a bit higher brake/shift hood position, lower gearing, mountain bike pedals, (I like) wider handlebar, and (I like) a tad shorter stem.

Custom is always an option - but if you fit a stock VaMoots, I'd bet the farm a stock cross will fit. Welcome to cross.

I welcome everyone's comments, but hope to here from Jon as I know he rides his cross bike a lot. I'm looking for a new bike that I can use to ride the gravel grinder rides in Kansas, as well as dirt roads around my home in Oklahoma. Would you recommend the Psychlo X for this type of riding? Do you know the max tire clearance for the Psychlo X. Also, I currently ride a 56 Vamoots and really like the geometry; particularly the taller head tube which provides a more upright comfortable position for me. I've noticed many cross bikes, including the Psychlo X have a longer top tube and shorter head tubes when comparing equal sizes. How do you size a cross frame? Would you look to the same size as your road bike or go down a size? I want to avoid a stretched out position on the bike, as well as tall stack height between the head tube and stem. Jon, if you're willing to share, how does the frame size differ between your road bike and cross bike? What would be your recommendations when sizing a cross bike in comparison to a comfortable 56 Vamoots?

Thanks for the input. There is another reason that was a byproduct of the double curve down tube...it brings the bottle just a touch closer to your reach. Yes, the first reason we did the double curve was to differentiate the MX RSL from the MX Ybb and MX....as a normal 29er the down tube comes off the head tube at a very steep angle and will typically put the bottle location lower and for some, harder to reach. It's a small thing, but we sweat those things.

Thanks,

I like em curvy! Only reason I haven't ordered up a MX RSL is I'm on the fence between the regular MX's standard BB & headtube and the RSL's PF30 & 44mm inset. The fact that the regular MX now has the first bend + formed chainstays for more clearance further muddies the waters for me. What to do, what to do...

My wife absolutely loves the curved tubes. She was upset when my 18" Rigormootis Slider came in and didn't have the curved top tube of the 16" pictured in the 09 catalog. When she gets her Moots it'll have every tube bent that Moots offers, I'm certain.

Me, I'm happy I have the MX RSL I have, mostly as I ride it rigid, so the 100mm change might mess up angles with my current fork, and I dig the single bend look. However, the smaller sizes like Kelly Boniface's bike look dead sexy with the double curves.

As for the Divide, I like the curved tubes on it a lot. The MX RSL will take some time to grow on me.

I like the sencond bend in the downtube and especially like the fact that the MootoX RSL is now spec. for a 100mm fork. Unlike other frames (for example Black Sheep) that have bends in all their tubing it is just the down tube for the RSL and it is pretty subtle. I have a '12 RSL on order and can't wait to get it built up. Should be on the trails by late October / early November. My Enve / CK UST wheelset is being ordered this week (3 week lead time from Wheelbuilder).... psyched!! Will be mated to a set of Nobby Nics (2.25 R / 2.35F)
