Thanks Rob, I'll be there.

Not sure how muddy it will be, but thats what mountain biking is all about I guess. Any thoughts of checking out the plantation section ?

If I'm not totally zonked keeping up with you, might be fun to check out later on.

Tim I flicked an e-mail to you but thought I'd post up here too.

I'm meeting a mate at Wombat/Woodend tomorrow at 9am (Sunday 5th Aug) if you'd like to join us for a jaunt around the trails (any and all welcome).

Howdy,

Woodend really needs a few dry days to become good. Hard to do in the middle of winter.

The pics are easy ....
Step 1 - Upload your pic somewhere on the internet like Picassa, image shack, photo bucket or whatever. From this you should get a URL to the picture. eg:
http://somewhere/something.jpg

Step 2 - Put a post on here, and use HTML codes to embed the picture. The forum shows "Allowed markup" include the img tag like:

<img src="http://somewhere/something.jpg" />

G'day guys,

Was a good day out at the Youies. Very keen to get over to Buxton plus the trails you mentioned over a Woodend, Tim.

A mate and I went over to explore a bit of the Walmer state forest last Saturday at Castlemaine- great network of trails out there too.

I'd also be pretty keen to find out how to post pics here Tim if you can give us some tips.

cheers

Bikes look great and glad you guys had a good time. Always nice to see the sun out and a couple of beautiful bikes ready to shred.

I might be OK for Buxton in August, but the arm is refusing to heal as fast as I had hoped. Back on the road bike, but still not ready for the trails.

I've finished building up the MootoX and now just waiting to get out and try the bike/arm.

I have a a couple of pics I'm sending to the Gallery at Moots, but how do I get one up here for you guys to see?

Hi Folks,

I do love the plantations in woodend/macedon. They still get pretty wet in winter and I can only pray the moto's stay away or they'll get ruined. These trails are very flowy and have an excellent mix of trail features. Great place in summer to practice "pumping" I found.

Buxton drains much better, and is also a blast. I only make it out there once/twice a year though.

I think I'm still on for the 15th with Rob @ YY. How about a 10am pedal off from rangers office ?

Still be great to follow up with an August or Sept. ride and get a few more bikes along. I'm a little uneasy with been an organiser, but happy to fight spammers and relay emails if anyone wants:

Hey Guys I was thinking this post seems to be dominating the forum and thought that maybe someone could volunteer to post their Email address for the rest of us to send our details to, to organise rides.
I'd offer but I just dont have the time at the moment.
Shame there is not a PM function on this site to do this.
Anyway just a thought.

Hey Rob,

I'm running 2x10 and I offered up the cranks to the frame this evening at work. All seems fine. Clearance is fine. The only real problem is that Rotor give you heaps of spacers for every conceivable press fit BB and lots of info on how to use them, but as far as a traditional 68mm threaded goes, they are a bit lacking. But I should be able to figure it out. I am a bike mechanic after all. I have to say though, the Q-rings look decidely more oval than my old Bio-pace rings of yester year!! I'm not sure how I'm going to go on them, but I'm looking forward to trying. I'll send a couple of pics once it's all built up.

Yeah guys, I'm definately OUT. I tried to go for a ride on road today but the arm and elbow just aren't up to it yet (10 weeks post crash). So there is no way I'm going to get off road by the 15th. But keep me in the loop for August.

Picked up the MootoX frame from Cycling edge yesterday and can't wait to get to work tomorrow and start to build it up.

I reckon my elbow will make a miraculous recovery when I see the bike built up. I just won't be able to not ride it!!!

Hi Folks,

So, to recap:
Tim - In
Rob - In
Craig - Out
Will -Out
Russell - Likely Out
Rich - ?

I'm hesitant to flip-flop on the dates. Its hard to hit a moving target. If Rob is still keen, lets go for the 15th and report back.

Maybe a follow up in Aug ? It might even be a bit drier / warmer by then!

Rob. Unfortunately I'm not getting the RSL, just the standard, run of the mill, MootoX (if there is such thing as a standard Moots) and hopefully it will be with CE tis week ready for me to collect next weekend. That is best are scenario, but we'll wait and see?

Exie. The You Yangs is fine by me I know it's a drive, but if that's where most people want to meet, that's cool. we have the Great Dividing Trail up here in Ballarat and you can scoot off into the real bush at any time. But I don't think I'm going to be 100% by the 15th so you guys sort it out amongst yourselves and if I'm ready, I'll come to wherever you decide. it's really no drama for me to travel.

Will. Expats are always welcome here. I'm an expat Pommy, who used to live in NYC for a year, but now Australia is home and I'm glad to call it such too. I wish I still had my Psychlo, it was an awesome bike but I sold it when I couldn't find any cyclocross in Melbourne. This was maybe 8 years ago. But since it's taken off again, I treated myself to a Speedvagen and am more than happy. Hoping to get down to the Dirty Deeds this season and get back in the swing of chucking the bike on my shoulder!!

Will - Welcome aboard! It'd be a pleasure to meet you. The more the merrier.

Folks - Looking for some consensus, How about the You Yangs on the 15th July.
If we warmed up around the plantation area, this is very accessible. There are regular trains to Little River or Lara. There are good parking & BBQ facilities too.

This will mean a big commute for Russell (2-2.5hrs) if he's ready by then (but the plantation is pretty gentle, and if you take some suspension it should be even easier to roll along!). It may also be a big trip for Craig depending on how far east he is.

I'm easy any which way, YY is < 1hr for me. If there are 3 or more ready to give it a shot we'll go from there.

If the meet up goes well, I'm sure we can other gatherings will follow.

I'm also in Melbourne with a pair of Moots and just happened to sell a previous Moots to Craig. I'll be riding quite a bit at Lysterfield, You Yangs and Wombat on a Mooto X RSL and racing Cyclocross on my Psychlo X. If you all are willing to ride with an expat American I'd be interested in coming along for the Moots riders sessions.

Glad to see you guys are sorting out a ride. Makes me want to heal quicker and get back out there. Seeing the surgeon again ina couple of weeks, then I should be OK to hop back on a bike of some sort. Don't know whether a MTB is going to be the go straight off, but we'll see.

Have yourselves a great ride, wherever it takes place and report back.

Russ.

Well I picked up the second hand MXRSL yesterday and am really looking forward to throwing a leg over it, but that wont be any time soon with fanily/$/time getting in the way, bit of a longer term project.
So you guys might have to forgive me if I dont turn up on a Moots this time.

As far as rides go I think places like Smiths Gully and Warramate could just be too wet at this time of year and given we don't know each others skill level maybe a bit too techy??.
Whilst a Yarra trail ride suits me best the You Yangs could be a good compromise(traveling wise) although I haven't ridden out there in 15+years.
At least with a Yarra trail ride it would be a good chance to just meet and then there are options afterwards for a bit of a feed/coffee(a must)
Eumeralla at Anglesea has some great intermediate trails that hold up well in winter and could also be the go.
A morning ride on the 14th also suits me best.

Cheers

Craig - Great to hear, I did around the bay on my Cinco one year, but did it by myself and it wasnt much fun. 200km on a 5" bike! Not to mention the specialized fat boy's just looked wrong. :) Like you, I'll ride anywhere, always happy to be on the bike. I've only ridden Warramate a few times, but it seems to be getting more and more technical. The trail builders up that way are pretty damn good riders, there must be something in single-speeding (but I havent got it).

Never been to Eumeralla, I'll put that on my "todo" list. :)

Russ - I'm sort of with you, I tend to re-word that as quality. If something designed well and made with craftsmanship, then I'll put it on my bike.

I've never had a flat/blowout with UST, so I'm a big fan of the Mavic 819's. I've got 3 sets in my shed, the Mavic's have out lasted the Stans and DT hoops and they just work. I agree about the goo problem, but I only take my tyres off once a year (when they're worn out!).

Ritchey do have a good reputation, but as stated, I was let down with their WCS Ti V4 pedals, and haven't brought their products since, but that's just me. Its probably a person preference, like SRAM vs. Shimano.

Rob - I've been very happy with Enve bars, the rims look pretty good too. You've made a good choice with DT 240's, mine have been through everything and never missed a beat.

I'm still thinking light XC trail ride for the meet up. It should be pretty accessible for all, but will be hard to balance Eastern suburbs with ballarat & bendigo. off the top my head, lets put 3 options out (feel free to add others) and gauge your thoughts:
(a) Metro Bike Path Loop - Yarra, Gardiners Creek, Anniversary Trail, Capital City trail etc. easy 40km-ish
(b) Smiths Gully - 35km from CBD single tracks through boomers reserve and rob roy reserve a mix of up/down trails
(c) Blackwood - 89km from CBD Byers Back track is flat, water race, shorter ~20-30km some technical sections

.... I like the idea of heading west/noth-west, otherwise it would be a big trip for Russell. What do you guys think ?
Anything in the middle we could aim for ?

most of the above trails are listed in the ORCA books if you have them.

Russ- I've always liked Mavics too. Crossmax wheels have been a favorite, notwithstanding freewheel maintenance, the wheels are good- nice strong rims. I've been tempted away from Mavics on the RSL though. I bought a pair of Enve XC 29'er rims on DT 240 (running tubes). Very happy with the wheels. Seem to be pretty robust and relatively light. Was a little unsure about a carbon rim at first but they appear to be holding up very well.

Exie, the 14 or 15th is perfect. Happy to meet where ever consensus decides but would err towards a trail ride if that works for all.

And the list just keeps growing....cool. Welcome Craig.

Exie..I'm afraid I'm st a bit old school when it comes to my own bikes. I have a tendency to use components I know work, and have never let me down. When I do try something new (Rotor cranks) and they work, I'll stick with them. This is the same reason I've had three Moots!

I like the Ritchey stuff. Sorry you've had a bad experience with the pedals and that would be enough to put me off too but every Ritchey bar and stem I've had has been solid and I've never had a problem.

Same with the Mavic rims. Mavic don't make the best wheels anymore (they used to), but their rims are still amongst the best. I've had to build up numerous STANS wheels over the past year, because they are all the go, but the high end ones are too narrow and the rim lip is just not tough enough, certainly for UST. Every man and his dog wants STANS because they hear they are the best, but (again) coming from a workshop point of view, they just aren't up to it. Putting a 2.2 or a 2.35 tyre onto such a tight rim lip is asking for trouble. They will have their day in the sun and then people will get sick of them always popping. Mark my words! The Mavic is wider, heavier and non UST and will work better.

As for going UST, again, it's just not for me. The last two flats I've had were pinch flats where I hit a sharp rock whilst racing. A UST tyre/rim combo wouldn't have helped me in those situations, except to make the whole process of changing to a tube very sticky and messy. My full on race days are over anyway, so changing a tyre is no drama for me. I do it a hundred times a week in the shop and have it down to a pretty quick time out on the trail. I just hate all the mess and gunk of UST. It's a great idea for XC racing and I'm more than happy to do it for the customers, but it's just not my cup of tea.

Like I say...I'm just a bit old School.

Guys, I'm in Melbourne,eastern suburbs.
I've been riding Moots(road) for around 12 years now and worked in and around the bike industry for 20+ yrs.
In the past I've imported quite a number of Moots frames for my customers(but not since Cycling Edge became the distributor).
I've actually never owned a Moots MTB although that might change very soon as i've been negotiating the purchase of a second hand MootoXRSL.
I'll ride anywhere Forrest,Eumeralla,Smiths Gully, Warramate,Yarra trails,Lysterfield, the 'Nongs, Beach road 'round the block you name it, if I'm on the bike I'm happy.
For many years I was pretty much it out on the roads around Melbourne as far as Moots owners go but these days it looks like the secret is finally out.
Anyway keep me posted on possible dates for a ride and I'll try and fit in.
With a young familly and lots of commitments a ride closer to Melbourne would suit me

Welcome Craig!

What region of this fine state are you located in ?
Whats your favourite riding spot ?

Russ - Thats a great build, I'm not a fan of the Richy stuff myself, had a very average experience with their pedals. Also curious what lead you to the Mavic 719's ? I dont know much about 29" wheels, but no UST ?! Otherwise, great build, love to see how the Rotor cranks look.

Rob - I gave up racing a while back, so no Interwinter/Chase-the-sun for me. I might have attempted the Forrest 6-hour if I was in town, but missed that this year. Redesdale was pretty good when I was up there 3 months ago. Pretty technical track I thought, but good, especially the last 1/4 with all the flowy down hill bits.

As for a gathering, in a few weeks sounds good to me. I think alot of people are pretty busy with EOFYS, so mid-July will be perfect, and hopefully Russ will be on the bike by that stage too! Should we pencil in the 14th or 15th and see how everyone goes ?

Any consensus on location ? ... I'm more off-road inclined myself, so any of the above locations is great.
