Steamboat Cyclocross 2010

Mountains, cool temperatures and leaves changing color.  These all mean one thing….Cyclocross season is upon us.  Here in Steamboat this usually means the start of a season that pulls those of us that love the sport in many directions at once.  Long drives to the front range to take in weekly races get hard to do when the one way trip is 3 hours.  Between here and there are two major mountain passes over the 160 mile drive that can leave the best winter driver at a lose of words and skills.  It’s been a dream of a few hard core and dedicated cyclocross nuts to bring a race to Steamboat.  We have long known this town to be the perfect setting for such an event.  Venues are riff through our town, passion runs deep and the weather…well we don’t much worry about he weather, especially since hardened cross fanatics live for the days of foul weather.

GLEN “OH SO” LIGHT TOPS THE CLOVER MOUND ENROUTE TO 2ND IN THE 35+

So this last weekend a dream came true.  Many man hours, much sweat and loads of worry later we had ourselves a proper Cyclocross race.  We picked over the course inch by inch, details of start/finish area, really putting down a real crossers course.  We had a pretty good turn out (about 85 racers) for the first year event.  We hope to grow that into a double weekend that pulls 200+ racers in the future.

SAM GORDON OF MOOTS AFTER KILLIN’ IT….

We all know that putting on a bike race of any kind is a thankless job at best.  Committing to such a task means you most likely won’t be racing your own race. So,  it made me smile to see one of the hardest working guys at Moots do just this.  Not only did he hunker down and put on a killer race on a killer course, he got to suit up and lay down some incredibly fast race laps as well (that’s Glen in the photo).  He powered off the front of the 35+ group from the start, battled to take 2nd….and have some fun.  Because that’s what it’s all about right…fun?  Catching that much air on a cross bike will put a giant smile on your face, and I’m pretty sure I saw Glen grinning from ear to ear after the day was done.
